What to do with D cell maglites?
I've been sorting out the garage and come across three maglite torches, one 2D cell and two 3D cell torches. I've much better torches for brightness but seems a shame to bin them. I've seen the niteize replacement LED's but they don't seem particularly bright and rather expensive considering it's only an average output led.
Interested in polite suggestions as to what to do with these old maglites.

Re: What to do with D cell maglites?
Genuine advice: bin them.
I have modded numerous Mags and always end up selling them. They are just too dam big and heavy and even with decent drop-ins end up not very bright. What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence - Christopher Hitchens

Re: What to do with D cell maglites?
I'm too cheap to buy new flashlights. I just use the old D-cell mag lights. They are good enough for what I do. I don't feel bad if I drop them either.
Whoever dies with the most tools wins.......Now accepting donations.
I buy old folding and fixed blade knives of all kinds. Especially Case. PM Me.

Re: What to do with D cell maglites?
Hey, thanks for this! Just last week SWMBO was saying she'd throw out my old (20 years or so) 2D maglite unless I did something with it. It can have some new tech breathed into it and it can go in the cupboard next to the back door for when I need to find stuff in the garden when it's dark. It can go next to the Innova x5 I retired there when the batteries in the Maglite ran out. And on the other side of the 1D Maglite I got from TobyPra last month to replace the Innova when I thought it just wasn't bright enough.
Oh dear...

Re: What to do with D cell maglites?
I put the NiteIze LED into my mini maglites and they are brilliant (IMHO, pun intended)
Are the D cell ones not as good?Last edited by JabaliHunter; 29-03-12 at 05:56 PM.

Re: What to do with D cell maglites?
The night eyes maglite drop ins were pants for the bigger lights, I ended up with the genuine maglite drop ins which where a bit better but still nowhere near the output of "current" leds, mine are 4d maglites so not all the non genuine replacements were rated for 4d

My maglites are the spare spare reserve torches, I only really keep them because it isn't really worth selling them. All our car emergency torches run CR123's so they are likely to work when we need them, and the main use torches are 18650 or rcr123 driven.
I'm afraid maglites days in the big format must be numbered.

Re: What to do with D cell maglites?
I disagree. Easy to mod, bog standard D or C cells you can get anywhere, and sometimes you want a big torch. The torch in my pocket is a malkoff , sure, but the torch by my bed is a 4D maglite.
With a malkoff drop in...Suppose we could expel sin by this means; look how much we thus expel of sin, so much we expel of virtue: for the matter of them both is the same; remove that, and ye remove them both alike....It would be better done to learn that the law must needs be frivolous which goes to restrain such things, uncertainly and yet equally working to good and to evil."

Re: What to do with D cell maglites?
Hmmm... interesting thread. I have a 6 D cell maglite in the loft somewhere. What sort of drop in would you suggest for that?

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.
