Re: Damp stick chicken competion
the problem is that if someone like Guy has a stick the size of his forearm, its going to be what most call a log, my forearm, and you'd call it a twig!

Re: Damp stick chicken competion
I don't even want to entertain the other possibilities of such an arm, but do not worry. You could cheat all you want and I'd never know it anyway

The idea is for you all to provide some nice photographs of your attempts, best effort wins.

Re: Damp stick chicken competion
We don't eat chicken and I only have skinny arms so I did this instead.

I wanted to study history but there's no future in it.
So that's what an invisible force field looks like !

Very impressive

Not entirely conform the comp guidelines, but impressive nonetheless!

Plenty of wood in my garden and I'd love to have a go, but last time I ate chicken out the back-

Ginger necked the lot and she's not been the same since!

Re: Damp stick chicken competion
The selection of knives;

None other than these two had a spine that would produce a good spark;

My choice of wood was a very resinous chunk of pine. Takes a spark easy, but makes very sooty flames;

Now, to bust it into bits I stupidly chose the Canadian. This knife is hairy scary sharp and I should have chosen perhaps the Rusul or Cold Steel;

Bad stuff, the knife was fine but ran into a knot. Ah well shite happens. Back to the cooking...and Snippy is starting to take an interest. This is good as the chicken will be fit for dogs after my cooking
Fatwood pine shavings took a spark immediately

Now you'd think that it would be fairly easy to cook stuff after this, but it isn't. The Pine burns really sooty due to it's resin content.
Having PB probs, back soon hopefully.
The chicken meat;

Snippy waiting for some food...

Chicken "cooking"...

Now...the eating...well it tasted horrible, really sooty;

Did my little dog eat it? Nah.

Re: Damp stick chicken competion
Would love a go at this

Will be camping in Edale for the week so if I find some suitable wood before hand I'll try it but it'll likely be in a BBQ base to conform with campsite regs.... Or will that be considered cheating?!
I'd be choosing some birch with decent bark for starting if I can find something old enough in the local woods.It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.

Re: Damp stick chicken competion
If he has some of that bark, it will light easily enough. And your chicken will definitely taste better. BBQ pit is allowed!
Valiant attempt Rich, I enjoyed seeing those pictures and you even got the Tabasco out (probably to hide the taste as much as possible).
You're in the lead for the time being and you probably could do with a new knife anyway after the log splitting
