Re: Starting a new project.
Ok so this afternoon after work I started annealing the bigger file.
My old man was kind enough to spend his morning burning a load of his rubbish to make me some ash, it was still burning when I got there, so the file plus another bit of steel (for mass) went into the hot ash and it was covered with heavy duty fire bricks.
Tomorrow we start to have fun.
I think I'm going to do two blades, one coil spring one file. And I'm letting my better half design the handles
Cheers
Leigh

Re: Starting a new project.
leighwill1, looks like you've got at least one full tang and a couple of hidden tangs goin' here, I'll be very interested to see what you come up with ?
There's a couple of gents on here Karl-Erik and nstormin13 that make blades out of the used saw blades, you might want to PM them and see if they have any tips you might find useful.
Now as for the spring ?? I'm sure you'll surprise me !!Old Norwegian proverb:
Behind the clouds the sky is always blue.

Re: Starting a new project.
My sincere apologies gentlemen, due to work commitments
i have been unable to get to the forge for a few weeks, so i have been unable to make any progress.
please bare with me as i will be hitting the forge this weekend.
as for plans.
I'm thinking of halfing the bigger file and doing a type sheepfoot blade with antler handle and using some stainless as a guard and also using a chunk of the stainless bar as a pommel.
to do this im thinking of welding on a bit of threaded bar to the tang and blind tapping the stainless!!!!
Any ideas welcome.

Re: Starting a new project.
ok so i finally made some progress today, it has finally stopped raining so i fired up the forge and proceeded to beat some iron. first i made this to warm myself up.

then i heated up the large file in the first pic and proceeded to beat it, and it all went horribly wrong it must have been case hardened cos on the very last hit the thing exploded on me, ALWAYS wear goggles.
so the files have been put back in the tool box and i had a mooch through my stuff and remembered my uncle got me some funny shaped chisels off the boot sale.

these are stamped W.Whitehouse atlas forge. any body have any info on these.
any way as you can see i flattened one of them out to about 6mm thick and about 35mm wide and halfed it and forged a rough blank out of one half and left the other till tomorrow, that one is going to be a full tang with scales made out of the zebrano i just got.
any way couple more pics. this is just rough forged for now still got a bit of work to do, clean up and such

it was all a bit too much hard work for Bandit.

Re: Starting a new project.
little bit of progress today
started fileing the blade today just used a hand file and cleaned up the surfaces and started the plunges

left a little bit of meat on the blade edge to try and prevent any warpage during heat treat.

not sure if i like the shape might have a play around with it.
i still have to clean the surfaces up a bit more as they arn't flat, the spring steel has been flattened out and i am still trying to workot what they will become

Re: Starting a new project.
not made much progress lately but today i re-profiled the blade to a more appealing style, i think anyway
also filed most of the imperfections out of the surfaces.

thanks for looking
