Re: Folding Firebox Passaround
Ever wondered why Ireland is known for 40 shades of green?
It's the "summer" ! not a dry patch anywhere but i did manage to get a few goes of the firebox.
So here is my first ever BB pass around review
I am going to compare the Folding Firebox to what I currently may use when out and about and need a brew or hot food
A Kelly Kettle
MSR Wisperlight
Open Fire
My reasoning for this is to justify any potential purchase I need to find a need and not just buy something cos it looks cool.
(admittedly I still often fail to be totally objective
)
I won't comment any further on the clever folding design cos that s the main feature and it does it very well.
My thought s on it as a firebox are mixed.
It is a handy size in that it can take enough fuel to get reasonably hot before it needed feeding, I managed to scavenge some dry hawthorn. Luckily I was n't in a survival situation so a liberated page from the Irish times and a lighter got the whole thing started.
My fire lit easily enough, bit of experimentation lighting from underneath, through the side and on top to find top lighting was the most effective.
Now i use the kelly kettle for making a brew when out and about with the kids and not walking too far, there is an obvious size and pack-ability difference but not a whole lot in the weight. The biggest difference is in how much fuel the fire box used to boil 1.8 litres (ish) of water compared to the kelly kettle.
The firebox took a good armful of hawthorn and nearly 10 minutes compared to half the amount of fuel and time with the kelly kettle.
I found that the big advantage the kelly kettle has is that it makes very efficient use of the breeze to fan the flames and utilizes the heat very efficiently. The firebox is too open, the flames where being blown out the sides, and there is no way to control the draw or vents, you loose quite a lot of heat this way.

There was however enough left over to cook up my lunch

A very nice heat for cooking and no further fuel required from what I had already gathered
Now you can cook over a kelly kettle but this was better
Up against the Whisper light? well its not a fair comparison really in terms of weight, size, speed. But in terms of available fuel (if you run out of petrol) and cooking heat it does do very well however I would only consider the Firebox for burning wood it would not replace a Whisperlight
I would not consider its capacity to burn Hex, meths etc as any advantage over what I already have.
CONS
it's heavy
Its not that much more efficient than a well protected and drafted fire to justify the weight
The carry bag would need replacing with a heavier material (its starting to tear already and I was careful honest
If it was an inch shorter it would fit inside my stowaway pot
Takes a long time to cool down
You can't adjust the venting
PROS
Its a very neat and well made design
It got admiring comments from friends
My kids loved it
It's neat and leaves no mess
Carbon Neutral
So would I buy one........... Probably not although i am tempted, not for practical purposes but for the design and novelty.
If it was slightly smaller and made from titanium
...... Oh yeah
Ok Mojo over to you can you PM your address please.

Re: Folding Firebox Passaround
Hi folks, the stove arrived today safe and sound

Not had a chance to play yet as it's been bucketing down but first impressions are clever design, easily packable and solid but the price to pay for that is weight, it's definitely on the heavier side than I was expecting.
As soon as it stays dry enough for long enough I'll have a play and let you know what I think

Re: Folding Firebox Passaround
Sorry Relin, I've just had a round of doctors appointments and a whole raft of tests to contend with and that's thrown all my plans out the window! Weather permitting I'll have a play over the next couple of days and then get it moved on.

Re: Folding Firebox Passaround
Still with me and as discussed, if no one else has any problems I'll keep hold of it for a little while until I get a chance to have a play and take some photos.
