Suggestions for Nepalese blades
Morning all,
I'm looking to go back to Nepal this summer, after a trip two years ago left me wanting to return.
Has anyone got any recommendations for some interesting Nepalese sharps? Kukhuris aside that is, though I appreciate these can vary greatly - a kukhuri 'sword' would be awesome...
I'll be looking to get them made whilst I am there, so I can go and actually see some of the work in progress - likely use the same blacksmith that made my kukhuri from my last visit, as his kukhuri has served me very well indeed. But, if anyone has particular makers they would recommend, then please do fire away.
I'll be likely based around Kathmandu for some weeks, and then off to Nuwakot district, so if there are any recommended smithys in those areas that are known of, any information at all would be much appreciated.
So in short:
Suggestions for knife types
Suggestions for smithys
Any advice would be lovely.
Cheers,

Namastie Hugh
It sounds like you have it covered really.
I am not aware of other styles of Nepalese knives really accept their scythe.
As for smiths or Kami's your best bet would be to PM Simon from Tora goes by the name Sirupate as he deals with Kami in Nepal.
Have a great trip and as Envy is a bad thing I must do an extra good deed today to make up.

Re: Suggestions for Nepalese blades
I have a 15" Sirupate ( Nepalese made, sourced for me by a Persian friend who lives in India - now that's what I call multiculturalism
) - I suppose that fits the bill of a khukri short sword, although it's really an agricultural tool more than anything.
I'd recommend one highly, the long slim blade looks really good and if you do have tasks like hedging or wood chopping to perform then it's great for that.

Namaste to you also David,
I got a little too familiar with their scythes last time I was there..! I would like to bring one back this time though - there was one particular style I got on very well with. I was taken the micky of as it was for a child - it had a large blunt section to protect from rather ridiculous over-swinging.
I'll go and check out Tora - thank you for the suggestion.
Your good deed was to be so kind as to give some suggestions, so deed done.
Cheers,
