New member knife identification please
Hello people,
This is my first post on the forum so please be gentle with me.
I was directed here from the UKWorkshop woodworking forum.
I'm clearing out stuff before moving house and cam across an old penknife and hoped someone could tell me whether it's worth anything. It says "John Ives" on both blades.
Thanks,
Pete

Welcome.
What a great looking knife, the handle has lovely lines and looks to be well made. I am sure the PM would give some info on who, where and when.
Hope to see more about it thanks for sharing.PARTING THE CLOUDS SEEKING THE WAY

Re: New member knife identification please
What you have there Pete is a two-bladed POCKET knife, not a penknife i.e. the blades are both hinged at the same end.
The scales are horn and the bolsters appear to be nickel.
It could be late Victorian in date, but as remnants of the word Sheffield appear below the 'Ives' name it would be worthwhile to carefully rub the very base of the tangs with a bit of wet and dry to see if the word 'England' is partly hidden by the bolster. In which case it would be early 20th century.
John Ives is not a name I've seen in the past so I've passed it on to Geoffrey Tweedale to see if he can throw any light on things.

Re: New member knife identification please
I've had a reply from G.T. who can find nothing on Ives; despite his vast collection of archival facilities.
Are you absolutely certain that the name reads John Ives? Quite often on old damaged marks the name is not always what it appears to be at first glance.

Re: New member knife identification please
Thanks for the replies.
It definitely looks to me like it says "John Ives" on it and "Sheffield" under, no "England".

Might be interesting to post this on the Bernard Levine forum.
