cable for damascus .
hello gents i found some lengths of the high tensil steel cable that you can use to make damascus with . the only problem i have its has quiet a build up of rust on it . if i heat and flux enough will it be expelled ?
i have access to shot blaster now and then would i be better to cut 12" lengths un wrapp it and shot blast. then put back togeather or just heat and flux and hope for the best ?
i wont know til i cut it how deep the rust has penatrated the bundles i spode .
there is no sign of any zinc or galvernisation on this and no bitchamin coating either , its from an old quarry crane .
all the best , matt

A degrease pickle will remove the rust if its deep. You would need some thick rubber gloves though that stuff is horrible to skin.

Any plating specialist will have a pickle mate, it works better warm. Never known a dishwasher rinse but hey might work

get it hot, give it lots of flux and when it is warming up keep giving it a good whack over the anvil to knock the crud out, then flux some more!
Ive degreased it in the past in diesel, but really only to keep the black smoke to a minumum when its heating up.

I would degrease and leave it in 20% hydrochloric acid overnight, neutralize and weld it up. First weld should be to twist it up even tighter, i'm told thats the best way to squeeze the flux and and remaining bogies out, and preventing further bogies and flux getting trapped. So maybe weld a bit of inch square to each end to give you something solid to grab with your twisting wrench.
