Grinder noob here

I have a Clarke bench grinder http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/pr...er-with-sander

However the belt keeps slipping off so I took the side plate off and remove the top drum spun it around in my hand and could feel it was loose think a bearing may have gone :/ bought this second hand off evil bay.

Should I ring up machine mart and see of they can service or fix this ? Or is there something I can do from home. All I want is an average grinder to try my hand at making scrap kiridishi knives and roughing out some wood.

Machine mart wanted something like 25 quid just to diagnose the problem and then parts and labour to fix it.

Considering that a NEW one is less than 60 I told him that was ridiculous

Yep, you have to get the hight just right on the side tension (tricky bit but sound once set) then you adjust tracking from left to right.

Right will have another play around with the heights etc. really getting pissed with it now.

Work on getting the tension set first, there should be some play on the belt but not in any way loose. Run it free hand first to get the feel then adjust tracking, once its running smooth and true turn the power on for a second and readjust if needed, then run it load free for ten mins to check any ware signs on the belt and heat build up on the motor. It's a bit of trial and error but once that's set just nip it up and leave alone. The tracking will need to be done every belt swap.
Johnt on here does great belts other than the standard wood type btw.

Oooo maybe I should I have asked about belts first I just went and bought some. Probably paid well over the odds and they are not metal specific I don't think. Manage to get it all true and running sound just been out there for about an hour happily making a total mess of a file I deemed "old"

Just needed some patience and a play with the tensioner.

Looks ace very accessible belt, that's my main limitation at the moment no way around it short of taking bits of metal guards off.
