    Zt 0550

Can anyone just clarify for me please. Got a ZT 0550 from Heinnies today and the blade is etched 'ELMAX' whereas I thought they were S35V. No problem either way, just after clarification from someone more educated in these matters!

The ZT0551's have ELMAX and different G10 Scales compared with the 0550, so this must be what Heinnie's sent you, whether by mistake or not who knows but they are now discontinued I think so I guess you got lucky unless you asked for a ZT0551?

Yeah, Thomas from ZT posted on BF that they did do some 0550's in Elmax by mistake.

People were going nuts for them, so I think you scored there. Plus, Elmax gets better reviews than S35VN.

EDIT: I don't know how to do the link thing, but the thread is on the 3rd page of ZT/kershaw subforum on BF, 7 down from top.

    Re: Zt 0550

My advice: do not ever complain about elmax in a non chopping blade!

by chopping blade I meant trailmaster, fbm, leuku etc. And my advice is just an personal opinion.

it is perhaps too brittle for some tasks, but then again, I think s35v is even more brittle.

I have honestly never seen anything other than "cowry x" and uddeholm steels other than ELMAX
    perform better.

Thank you for your replies, looks like I have dropped lucky then, it's definately an 0550, etched on blade and on box. I may buy a lottery ticket tomorrow!

This is correct, about 170 units were fabbed with ELMAX blades that were left over from the 0551 project. Very collectable, great score.

    Re: Zt 0550

Nice post some good info thanks for sharing. just read the blade forums thread it Would appear that quite a few people over there would like one and they are exactly the same price as the normal 0550 sounds like a bargin. Having 12 of them is quite a lot of them considering how few ELMAX 0550s they think got produced. I suspect that close to 12 might have gone by now. So what do people think of ELMAX?

    ELMAX? Score!
    Congrats.
I have only head good things about ELMAX.
Interesting also to hear that it is good in non-chopping blades BTW

    Re: Zt 0550

I got mine today. It's built like a brick **** House and really well finished. Does this hole mistake thing not sound odd they must have known all about these knives to laser them with the correct model number and steel. The serial numbers get laser etched last on the production line and *so they must have known which blades where ELMAX all along. Something else which is odd is that the codes are not in a run there are 113 and the first is 0686 and mines 0850 so they where made at different times or for different places. It would be interesting to see if distributors order a batch based on serial number so maybe these knives had a destination planned for them it's odd that heinnie would get 12 of them that's a lot really if it was random. It's over 10% all in one place. Whatever happened *it's got people talking If it was diliberate it's quite nice that no one knew and it couldn't be preordered or reserved and that there are far fewer than the 0551. I suppose a thanks to Heinnie Haynes for letting people know they had them (as well as the outstanding service and really fast delivery) is in order. *Its quite an unusual and rare opportunity available to anyone who wanted one at the regular price even though the 0551 was more than the 0550.

According to Thomas at Kershaw they knew about the issue alright before they decided to release them anyway. He was pretty sure that they went to the European distributor which meant they were difficult to get a hold of stateside which irked a few people but life's a beach sometimes. That might explain why HH ended up with a slug of em.

    Re: Zt 0550

Just checked again over on BF... Some have turned up in the US also. Just to confirm this was not a mix up the engraving These examples are definitely Elmax marked as such with the correct 0550 model number on them.
