Might be worth a PM. He's not about so much.

Hi I've been contacted about these by message via my website - www.billhooks.co.uk - the one in the centre of the image is definitely NOT English. The shape is more like some meat cleavers from Austria - the tool held by by Jack Hargreaves is a Devon pattern meat cleaver...

Damn you know your stuff. Mate, you're an asset here, look in more often.

The orange handled Wilkinson that cuts like a machete, I'd like to know how that tang (lack of) holds up to cutting Chesnut sticks on a daily basis without breaking.

More importantly, where can I find these episodes of "Out Of Town"?
I used to love watching that programme.

The Wilkinson Sword billhook is the UK version of the ubiquitous Fiskars model (sold as Gerber in the USA) - I have not taken one to pieces, but I guess the blade extends as a tang into the moulded plastic handle. So popular has this become, probably through aggressive marketing, that lots of regional models in Europe have ceased to be made. Fiskars now own Leborgne, one of the last edge tool makers in France - how long before they stop making billhooks and just sell the Fiskars. In Italy, the independent maker Angelo of Bergamasco has responded by making their own version called the roncola (billhook) Europe: http://www.angelo-b.com/ab/catalog/p...x%5Fdd=074730&

Personally for prolonged use I would prefer a wooden or leather handle over a plastic/rubber handle any day

I'll try and get a pic of the tang and measure its length. The plastic handle is hollow, I can push a stick into it and then measure it along the outside of the handle. The tang is tiny.

If the construction is as solid as the axes they do, I would think it pretty tough! I've abused my hatchet pretty badly but you could barely tell and no sign of movement.
