Re: Are rats tough
I have a tx200c in .177, & that was coming in at 11.7ftlb, that did the job, but i did have a few shoot throughs, i could see the pellet strike on the other side of the rat, & the entry/exit on them. When possible i used to try & rake them, so the pellet traveled the length of the body, shoot in to the chest from the front, shoot behind the shoulder into the "pump room" from the rear.

Re: Are rats tough
Shoot hem behind the front leg just like a deer. Got to get the lungs and heart. A mix of quick lime and corn flakes ground together will turn them into little mummies after they eat it.

Re: Are rats tough
I used to shoot em with a 12 bore around the pheasant feeders, often got 2 or three for 1 cartridge if they wer lined up right.
Have shot them with an air rifle 11.5ft lbs springer. At short range used to go right through, they'd run for about 5 -10 yards sometimes then just drop dead. Tried loading pellets backwards, still went through em.
Like most already said, proper headshots are best but seen em run even headshot, must just be nerves.
Could try .22 rimfire shotshells!

Re: Are rats tough
I shot some with my .22 caliber nitrogen piston pellet rifle and it did a job on them. I was using hollow point pellets.

Re: Are rats tough
I use 'Rodine' from rentokill.
Very hit & miss. Seems to work well in summer but they can eat stacks of it in winter before they stop comming back for more: Six handfulls over six days was the best/worse I saw. Even then you can't be sure they're dead. May just have moved house!

Re: Are rats tough
What's muzzle energy Tom ?in this the nanny state we are limited to 12ftlbs without a firearms certificate .I to would cheerfully hunt the beggars given the chance i have listened to my Grandfather tell some interesting stories about rat encounters he was a welder in the shipyards ,the intelligence and adaptability they displayed is quite surprising
