Frank Mclaury: You're next on my list, Holliday. You better get used to seeing my face, 'cause it's the last thing you're gonna see.
Doc Holliday: McLaury, seeing your face would be a pleasant change. I understand most of your enemies got it in the back.

Re: Wood - where to get it ? (Prepare for a long read)
hi.
Firstly, great thread.
in the 3rd photo (timber from the wood pile), the unknown timber looks like laburnam (though I could be wrong). It has a dark chocolatey heart wood with a beautifully creamy hard sapwood. brilliant for woodturning and a traditional timber for knife handles.
If you get friendly with a landscape gardener, you might get a large quantity,as every now again they fell entire trees. you can then either air season it or speed up the process with PEG (PEG can leave wood felling a little waxy).

Re: Wood - where to get it ? (Prepare for a long read)
Other sources of good handle making material worth mentioning are exotic flooring installers. Close to where I live, there is a supply house that specializes in the materials and installation of hardwood floors. They mostly use South and Central American hardwoods like Brazilian Walnut, Garapa (Brazilian Ash), Purple Heart, Bocote, Bulletwood, Guayacan, etc. This lumber is imported, dried, and cut into planks. During the installation process, the planks are cut to length and the end pieces tossed into a "hobby" sales bin. These pieces are perfect for differing sized scales and very economical. In fact, the owner of the establishment saves the pallet lumber and gave me several pieces of rough sawed Purple Heart that turned out to be very useful. Imagine, Purple Heart being used for pallet material!

Ash rings for logs, but a lovely cross grain.
