Water or oil with Lansky Sharpening System?

    Hi guys,

Been lurking for a couple weeks now and thought I'd make my first post.

I recently received a Lansky Sharpening System and so far it seems to be working out great, I just have a small query.

I've seen some of jDavis' videos on youtube with him freehand sharpening and he seems to use water on the stones while doing so.

The little booklet that comes with the Lansky only seems to suggest using the oil to clean the stones.

Should I be using oil or water on the stones while sharpening also? Or is it better to just use them dry?

    Thanks in advance guys.

    - Chris

    That's alright then.

Seemed to work better when I used oil but just wanted to make sure as the booklet didn't say anything about it.

    Thanks!

if you use water you can always go to oil when they dry.
You can't go to water once you've used oil as the oil penetrates

If this was in reply to me, it does come with oil but the instructions seem to say that the oil is only for cleaning the stones. Doesn't state to use it during sharpening so I just thought I'd double check.

I must admit I'm a noob when it comes to this.. Haven't sharpened a knife in my life before!

    Thanks again guys.

I use their oil with it as well.

This is a very useful article if you are new to using the system:
