    EDC in NYC an DC

I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but since I post here anyway I figured someone might know the answer.

What is the story with EDC in NYC and Washington DC. I have a trip planned to both places in August and would like to know what I can/ can't carry and where. I usually have either my UKPK, Leatherman Sidekick or Buck Squire in my pocket over here and I'd like to keep something with me when I travel.

    Any help is much appreciated.

Be very careful in NYC. If you carry your UKPK, don't even show the clip.

Thanks, Nightfly. Is my UKPK legal to carry, so long as I keep it fully concealed including the clip?

Technically since it is non locking (so not considered a gravity knife) and the blade is sub 4" (NYC law), you should be fine.
However if you are searched for any reason and the officer interprets your UKPK as "dangerous", all bets are off.
If you stay out of trouble and keep it out of sight, you will be ok. If you are polite and cooperative when questioned, most of the time you need not worry.

Thanks. I don't plan on giving anyone an excuse to search me, but I would really miss having some sort of pocket knife with me.

Any thoughts on DC anyone? I'm thinking this might be worse than NYC. I'm planning on visiting a few museums there too, so I might just leave the UKPK in the hotel for those days!

This may be of use: http://thefiringline.com/library/blades/knifelaws.html

As Nightfly noted, it's the 'open' carry of blades that is the nasty bit, even just a pocket clip showing counts as open carry. Why not stick to a little multi-function non-locking SAK deep in a pocket? Can't get much friendlier than that.

As to the specifics of DC, hopefully the above website may be of help. Its accuracy I cannot be 100% sure of though.

A lot of museums in the US have scanner gates at the entrance (like the Smithsonian). Best leave the UKPK in the hotel when you visit them. A SAK (as hughtrimble mentioned above) will be considered a lot less offensive than a UKPK, small and functional as that one is... Not familiar with DC law, but I doubt it will be much (if any) stricter than NYC at the moment. Have fun and visit the Temple Bar on Lafayette in NYC

The impression I got from Bladeforums (US Knife site) is that nowhere is as strict as NYC. There are instances of Case peanuts being "confiscated" and their owners threatened with all sorts of "trouble".

Mostly they have stood their ground and had their knives returned. IIRC, Statue of Liberty and Empire State building do not have a "facility" for safe keeping of pocket knives so you will be turned away if one is found on you.

Thanks for the info on the statue of Liberty etc. I will not bring anything there and inform my girlfriend also. She usually carries a small fixed blade neck knife as she is in the states.
