Some questions
Good evening everyboby,
Two words to introduce myself:i'm 65 years old,now retired,i live in the center of France in a little village.
During the spring and summer,i use to help my daughter ant his husband who are farmers.In autumn i go shooting little game (mostly woodcocks) ,and every sunday i go shooting big game (roebuck,red deer,wild boar).During winter,i have a lot of sparetime,so i began this winter to do knives again with purchased blades.
Since i am kid, as long i remember ,i like knives,i gathered during my life some folding knives,only folding ones.
But i tried to make fixed blades (for me less difficult to make than folders) from Lauri blades i purchased in France.
Sad to say ,since i know your forum (few days only),my knives look for me poor ones when i see the magnificent ones produced by the members of this forum.
Can you answer some questions :
-Are bolsters sold at Brisa's (for exeample ) under the name of "nickel" brass nickel plated or solid ones made in german silver ?I am reluctant to buy one or two beig afraid they are plated ones.
-When hou make a sheat,is there a way to turn the good side ,the ornamented one ,or can you do as you like?
-For a leuku handle,i understand that the swelling at the end of the handle is there to retain the knife when chopping,but i can't see on the pictures if the cross section of the handle is near an oval or more "egg-shaped".
Sorry for my bad english , i never practice .
Sincerely yours.

Palmier -
Welcome to the forum. I'm 68 and still loving Nordic/Scanidnavian knives. I don't make them anymore as my back and hand grip just don't work like they use to :-) Brisa guards, both brass and nickle-silver, are solid metal, not plated. I can't speak to sheaths, as I only made a couple years ago. The leuku handle is basically oval although there is nothing saying you can't make it any shape you desire. Hope to see some of your work.

Re: Some questions
+1 especially to hope to see your work! Don't be shy, we appreciate all efforts on here. We just appreciate photos of knives of any sort.

I also believe the leuku handles are often oval in cross section, and probably thinner than you'd think. Don't think there's any harm in making them ever so slightly egg shaped either, I have certainly done it with mine in the past.
Yeah, the Brisa german silver (=nickle silver = mix of copper, nickle and zinc) items are solid, not plated.Last edited by bwildered; 03-07-12 at 08:42 PM.

Re: Some questions
Welcome to BB.
All I can add to the good advice already given is have a look at this tutorial for your question about sheaths

Re: Some questions
to BB, Palmer!
Just enjoy and try benefiting from the knowledge and lessons learned by the good people of this parish.

@Scoutmaster
That`s a mighty fine Leuku you made there - I like it a lot!
@parbajtor
Thanks a lot for the link to that great (and very helpful) tutorial, mate!
Just try to make an educated guess
who could be the owner of that knife and sheath shown in this tutorial.....
