SureFire M2?

Looking for options on a heavy duty tactical light and was wondering about the M2 because of its shock issolated bezel.

I know a few of you here have got these lights, what do you think of them please?

Is it worth the extra money on top of say the G2Z that is supposed to be pretty shock resistant because of the nitrolon?

All help is greatly appreciated.

I have an M2, and i love it. However, the shock isolated bezel is really designed to absorb the fore and aft motion, IE the recoil from shooting a firearm. Not being a gun owner, i cant really say how effective it is.
Some further options : if youre not planning on strapping your M2 to the side of a howitzer, consider the C2...exact same light, except it lacks the shock isolated bezel and has one less o-ring on the tail. And the C2 bezel is a much more managable size, if you plan to cary it in your pocket. You can always order the M2 bezel to upgrade it to an M2 later. And just to confuse you a bit more, the KL5 is nearly upon us, which is basically the M2 with a 5 watt LED bezel. No shock isolation here, none needed. LEDs can take far more abuse than a fragile filament in an incandesant. But no high output option like the regular M2's P61.
In summary, the only thing on *any* surefire that needs shock protection is the lamp assembly. The bodies will take any amount of abuse you care to throw at it. If you want a light that will never let you down, Id personally get the KL5. Or you could buy an M2 now, and get the L5 LED bezel for it later.
FWIW, i bought the M2 and KL3 bezel just cos it looked so damned cool

kakster - it was the shock isolation I was most interested in, ie not having your light fail at an inoportune moment.

My edc at the moment os the SF L4 whicj I am hugely impressed with although it does not have the throw of a P60 assembly and no option for a higher output one however it still works if you throw on the floor in a paddy

I may just stick with my G2Z & P61 for the moment but I am aware that Joe;s supplty is going to run out very soon :crying: and wanted to get sorted out before it does.

My M2 is doing pretty well; I tend to only use the P61 lamp in it. My only gripe would be that the batteries rattle slightly. It is a much more chunky piece of goods than the L4 (or the Pelican M6, for that matter). Depends how bomb-proof you want to go, I suppose.

I had been under the impression that the M2 was designed more for use with a handgun than bolted onto a firearm - if I'm wrong, I'd appreciate further clarification!

My understanding is that the C2. M2 G2Z type of lights are designed to be used with the "Rogers/Surewfire" technique with a pistol with the light in your supporting hand beneath the grip.

Their shape however lends them to very easy carry in the hand and with the G2z (the only one I have actually held) if you remove all the rubber jonny things you get a very good grip with 2 or 3 fingers in the reduced diameter bit of the barrel.

Just be aware that the shock isolation will only really benefit you if you drop the M2 bezel or tail down. It wont do much for sideways impacts. As for the throw of your L4, well thats what the biggest advatage of the upcoming L5 is.. wider, deeper bezel makes for a longer, tighter throwing beam than the L4's diddy reflector. Still, no P61 option tho.

P_S Bond : im pretty sure you're right, its not meant to be actually *bolted* onto a gun. But im pretty sure with the gun and light both pointed in the same direction, most of the shock transferred to the M2 would still be fore and aft. Especially with the surefire/rogers technique, the 2 items being in such close proximity.

Wanted a longer throw. Got Joe to order me an A19 battery adaptor and a KT2 turbo head. That's 110lumens in a tuned reflector. <Rubs hands in gleeful anticipation>

Something more compact? Preordered my Arc AA!

Harvey, Joe got me a C3 combatlight recently and a P91 lamp assembly to take it up towards 200 lumens - it's awesome, pretty close to an M3 in power and much cheaper. The head of the C2\3 design is really compact. It has no shock isolation but is designed for the rogers technique so they must feel the lamp is up to the damped recoil it will meet in that application.

I also got a shock resistant head for my 6p from Joe. This is designed to let you bolt the torch on a 12 gauge. It copes with the shock created when the batteries are suddenly forced towards the lamp (dropped facedown or gun's recoil) The antishock head leaves a gap between the P60 lamp unit and the glass, filled with a spongy spacer ring. If the batteries then slam into the back of the lamp, the lamp can move forward against the soft spacer rather than being smashed. There is extra protection from side on impacts, and itmay not be needed.

those these two items have been ordered for 3 months nearly now....think they were made in HK..shipped to the Artic via blue whales...then flown to alaska where they were used by eskimos and then delivered to Surefire in seperate batches as the KT2 is not due in till end of month at the distributor.

OK, now I'm confused, is the KL5 available or not? I have an M2, which BTW harv is excess in the extreme, but beautiful nonetheless. It's just an over enginered piece of beautiful over-enginering.

Useful? Not if you have a G2Z - but the want-one factor is very high, especially with the KL5 head. Hey is that thing available or what?
