Is it possible to get a mirror finish...

...without any hand finishing, i.e. using just your grinder?

With the right belts and rubber contact wheel yes but I've never managed a Finnish I would call mirror, mine does not have a rubber contact wheel so after a few passes on a very worn 600 ceramic belt loaded I will hand Finnish.

You can go through the grits on Trizact belts 400,800,1400,2000 & you will be very close-just a light bufing.

So it looks like trizact is the way to go, and a little buffing. Thanks guys.

Quick question tatsumi, by loaded do you mean with a polishing compound? Maybe autosol or one of the bars used for buffing mops?

    I'd use bars on mops

Yes Del, sorry mate. I use a hard compound or bars on both belts and mops. The belt method will flatten the steel and give the finnal shine where as by going to the mop too soon you'll just be polishing scratches. As I said my kit does not give me the Finnish I look for in a mirror polished blade so I Finnish by hand.
