Which torches will run on both 1xAA and 1x14500?
I've just ordered some 14500 batts and a charger. I have a Nitecore Sens AA which I know runs on both AA and 14500's (370 lumens) and a Jetbeam PA10 which also will use either a single AA or a 14500 to bang out 650 lumens. But what others out there will run both 14500's and AA's?

ITP Eluma. Pretty good little thrower on 14500s. Nice UI too.

Doc Holliday: McLaury, seeing your face would be a pleasant change. I understand most of your enemies got it in the back.

Before I sold it, I use to run my Sunwayman v10A on 14500 batts

Re: Which torches will run on both 1xAA and 1x14500?
It still works on both
thx btw
The V11R and titanium V10R also work fine with both when using an extender (cheap and useful)

Quark AA. It's the most balanced of all the 14500 compatible lights at the moment, in terms of runtime/output. The Sens AA can bash out 300 something lumens but only for 30 mins, and on 14500s the Jetbeam only works on full turbo; no lower modes.

Sipik SK68 (and it's various clones) is a cheap bit of fun that takes both and is surprisingly bright on a 14500 - terrible beam quality though
Someday I should get round to finding a decent signature

Re: Which torches will run on both 1xAA and 1x14500?
Yeah, that was a disappointment. I've tried 14500's in both of em now and I must say the Jetbeam claim of 650 lumens is very optimistic. I'd say maybe a tad brighter than the sens AA, but not much and the hotspot on a Quark AA squared turbo running standard AA's is brighter. My guess is both the sens AA and Jetbeam BA10 are running at 300ish - give or take. But the sens AA gets silly hot in no time and the higher voltage seems to mess with the sens UI making it a bit flaky. I switched back to regular AA's in that one. The lack of low mode on the JB is a shame. Back to regular AA's in that too for that reason.
sigh - what I want is a compact AA/EDC size - something about the size of the sens, but with a clicky tailcap and that will run 14500's in both low and high mode without melting down in 30 seconds. I've been looking around and I may have found my holy grail the Eagletac D25A clicky looks perfect - gonna get one ordered.δxδp≥h/4π

Re: Which torches will run on both 1xAA and 1x14500?
To be fair, eyeballing lumen output is incredibly inaccurate - our eyes don't perceive brightness linearly, i.e. a 600 lumen light won't look exactly twice as bright as a 300 lumen one. Also, the XM-L led used in the Jetbeam is set up more for flood than the XP-G which is optimised for throw. Other reviewers have said that the Jetbeam's 650 lumens is fairly accurate. And your assessment that the Sens AA and the BA10 run at 300 ish is spot on; they use the lesser XP-G LED.
One thing I've found with 14500 lights is that their 14500 support is half-baked, rushed without much thought at all just to put another bullet point and a bigger number in the advertising. A lot of them are simple direct drive or very badly regulated, the Sens AA a prime example here. This combined with the lack of decent heatsinking means that it'll kill the LED measurably faster. This is why a lot of the 14500 lights say to only use the turbo mode for 5-10 minutes. The two lights I personally know of with decent design and support for 14500s are the Quark AA and the old Liteflux LF5XT.
Unfortunately that Eagletac is like the Jetbeam - direct drive and no modes. I also doubt that you're ever going to get a mini 14500 pocket rocket - the small body just wouldn't be able to handle the heat without the LED roasting itself slowly.
I'd also hold on ordering more lights at the moment. Cree just announced the XP-G2 - 20% more efficient than the plain old XP-G and has mostly the same optics. It's essentially a drop-in replacement. I'd wait for manufacturers to migrate to that or the XM-L before buying any more lights.

Re: Which torches will run on both 1xAA and 1x14500?
Bugger, I just bought one.
I'd be happy enough with the output of the sens AA running 14500's. I dont really need 300 lumens from a little EDC - but I do need a decent low mode. I'd be quite happy with a little EDC that I could program to run 3, 60 and 300 lumens. I'd only use the 300 once in a blue moon.I also doubt that you're ever going to get a mini 14500 pocket rocket - the small body just wouldn't be able to handle the heat without the LED roasting itself slowly.
Thanks for that, I'll hang fire on any more impulse buys for a bit.I'd also hold on ordering more lights at the moment. d25a twisty loses its low mode on 14500 - not sure about the clicky
