Historical deer stalking gun type question
Hi,
Just looking for a little bit of help with some historical info for a painting. What kind of gun would have been used for deer stalking in Sotland during the late victorian era? Shotgun or some kind of early rifle?
I'm uncomfortably outside my narrow area of expertise here so apologies if this is a bit of a daft question. I have given google a pounding but can't seem to turn up anything appropriate.
Thanks in advance.

A friend works as BASC and lectures on deer stalking. I'll ask him the question he may know.

Re: Historical deer stalking gun type question
Not an exact answer but the 'baker' rifle was manufactured from 1800 and the brunswick from 1836 so civilian rifles would have been produced before this date and would have been used for stalking i'd have thought. Looking for rifles dating from the period may turn up a few examples? Or looking through old christies auctions?

1837 to 1901 was probably the most innovative and prolific times of gun manufacture ever. take your pick. Here are some nice ones. Don't forget US rifles were commonly imported as well.

I spoke to my friend, he said that lots of stalking was done by dogs in that era with early rifles being blackpowder and america imports being popular. Looks like iron-hoarder has posted a great link.
