Newbie looking to Learn and start a new craft !!
Newbie here, just about to start to restore two of my Dad's old blades, they are in bad shape but want to do them justice and then i know he'd be proud of me, sadly he's no longer here to see my handy work but he'll see it in his own way.....
I have two old blades one i will post pics to show as it's an old Sabatier with a stacked leather grip and a France Air Force logo on the grip, the other is a unknown brand drop point that needs new grips and a sheath making too.
Looking forward to keeping you all posted....

Cheers
Iain

Re: Newbie looking to Learn and start a new craft !!
Hello.

I stumbled across BB when wanting to know how to care for my late Grandad's knife. There's lots of good stuff here.I rode over the mountains to Huddersfield. A wilder people I never saw in England.
The men, women and children filled the streets as we rode along, and appeared just ready to devour us.

The Sabatier is in good condition and doesn't need a lot doing to it. In fact anything serious is likely to decrease value. If the leather is slightly dried out, I would oil it with neatsfoot oil, just a wipe with a sponge rather than a soak should do. You could probably remake the sheath as the old one looks like it's been repaired previously. This may have been your dads handiwork, in which case, you'll probably want to keep it. I'd probably lightly oil it and then maybe a waterproofing like Nikwax, Dubbin or even just beeswax. If it was mine, i'd just recondition all the leather and then send it to longstrider to put an edge on it.
Go to town with the blade blank and make your dad proud.“I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.”

Cheers for the advice there, I will get me some oil and start rubbing and see how it goes and then get the blade sharpened too, I may have a go at a completely new sheath and keep Dad's old one safe, the brass cap on the end was his idea to make it wearable and safe so it didn't push through the end of the leather...

Finally started on the Sabatier and looking to get the Neatsfoot oil but it's costs a bit hey ? and all seem to be 500ml smallest size ! I only need a smallish amount to give a few coats/soaks to the grip, I have treated the sheath to some leather food rub they use on saddles etc but wanted the real Neatsfoot for the grip, as it won't go tacky.
Also cut out the scales for the blank too........
