You’re right, police officers do not need a law degree; I have neither am nor professed to be a solicitor. However, even the most academically-challenged of officers would find it difficult not to absorb the odd tit-bit of information here and there from their work environment. In my case, I never arrested anyone for having a bladed article but knew of dozens and dozens of officers who had. Furthermore, I also know just how quickly an individual would fail the ‘attitude test’ if they started to lay-preach the law.
I neither profess to be an ‘expert’ and I cannot of course refer back to the scores of ‘Guess what happened to me’ stories that you all may have heard from within the knife-collecting community. However, what I can tell you all is that no distinction in the law exists between the ‘countryside’ and a ‘park’ – That’s pretty much all I had to say on the matter but that statement has seemed to upset a few people! Why??

Yep, I have to agree. However, I would hazard a guess that there many more ‘lay people’ who fall into that category.
I didn’t join this forum for an argument but equally didn’t join to be snapped at or patronised (not directed at you by the way). I entered this discussion to clarify to the OP that no distinction existed between ‘the countryside’ and a park in the eyes of the law – they’re both public places so, without a good enough reason for having one, you stand the chance of being arrested if found with a dubious-looking blade– Did I misunderstand what Alex was saying?
If either of you can find an inaccuracy with anything that I have said then please correct me

    Hi,

No offence taken and I, as I have already said, have never professed to be some kind of legal guru - My knowledge was limited to what I needed to know and my memory is rusty. However, I know that a 'public place' is a 'public place'... whether that be Glen Nevis or Hyde Park.

Please quote me where I said I know everything about the law - As far as I remember all I said was that I didn't need to be 'told' it by someone else

So you realise that my point was not directed at you, yet simultaneously you are set on the fact that it was directed at you? A strange combination.

Nope, I said there was no offence taken - With respect, I really couldn't care any less whether my advice is listened to over the internet or not
However, although you made me feel as though I hadn’t wasted three years of my life in the police here…

Therefore, I felt that this contribution to the thread must have been influenced by me inadvertently claiming to be an expert; especially when you feel so strongly about Uke’s comment…

Anyway, like I said, no offence taken – I just wondered why you needed to put the comments you did as I felt they were aimed at me.

Once again, you have a dual understanding of the situation - you say no offence taken, yet you clearly have taken offence. I made a comment, you've taken it to heart. Sorry about that. But it'd be helpful if you would actually appreciate that comments made in threads about certain issues are rarely, if ever, directed at individuals.

Ah sorry, I just thought that your ‘police’ comment that you chose to write directly beneath a word-for-word quotation of my post, with the words ‘Lastly, I do not need to be told what the law states; up until twelve months ago I was in Warwickshire Police’ highlighted in bold, was directed at me?
Maybe you should be a little clearer next time.
Shall we draw a line underneath this now? – I would hate for people to think I was over-sensitive!

I would have taken offence at that to be honest Hugh. You cant slap someone in the face and then tell them it wasn't a slap in the face - or at least you shouldn't be too surprised if they dont believe you.

Lets call it a day on this one - I've had enough of the 'he said - she said' handbags.
