That's a great piece of work, I'll be having a practice tomorrow I think![]()
For a member on the Weapons.be forum I made a simple file work tutorial. I thought it could be nice to show here. It is really basic file work, but nice for someone who wants to start with it.
This is an example of the finished pattern:
OK here we go:
These are the basic tools, round file, half round file, something to mark the steel and a triangle file (not in the picture).
Here I mark the steel. I use a round file as a guide in a 45-degree angle. The thickness of the file is used as spacing.
Then I file a groove on the marking. In this case I skip one marking after each groove. Otherwise there wouldn't be enough space between them.
After that I file with the triangle file a fine groove between the deeper grooves.
Because the rope pattern is flowing from right to left, you have to file from right to left.
you do the same with the wider grooves, with the round file.
Should look something like this
To join all the grooves we use the half round file. With this file we widen the bigger grooves even more, so they will touch the smaller ones. Keep filing from right to left so it is round and moving.
Almost finished
Finish
From here you smoothen things with sandpaper, to get everything smooth and tight. When you look at a knife from the side with this pattern, you should see a very even repeating pattern. Every groove should as deep as his neighbor. Delicate work but fun to do.
I hope my English explanation is understandable.
