Sharpening Extravaganza Pass Around
Well the good folks at Spyderco are at it again. Arrived home today and found a parcel waiting for me, inside was a brand spanking new Spyderco 204 Sharpmaker, including a PAL (UK format) instruction video.
To add a bit of interest what I’m proposing to do is package up the Sharpmaker, together with an instructional video for Ben Dale’s Edge Pro, a sample of honing leather from Hand American, and the first 6 people get a baggie of pure chromium oxide (stropping compound) also from Hand American.
Personally I find this my ideal sharpening and maintenance set-up (together with a folding steel from Razors Edge and Spyderco’s extra fine ceramics).
One week to sign up, and please read the guidelines HERE, although I think we can safely drop the 18 age limit for this one. If interested, e-mail me at yog@meshmonkey.eclipse.co.uk
Spyderco Sharpmaker.
Probably the most widely known and used ceramic “V” sharpener in the world. Folds up into a very neat package, ideal for travelling. So easy to use even I managed to put a decent edge on a knife on my first attempt (in fact it was the first time I ever managed to put a decent edge on a knife
). The video is worth a goggle, because despite a couple really cheesy guest presenters, you get to see a surprisingly large number of things sharpened by none other than Sal the man.
Edge Pro video.
The only thing the Sharpmaker doesn’t do excellently is re-profiling really hard steels, which coincidently is what the Edge Pro does do exceedingly well. The Edge Pro is a synthetic water stone sharpener that does everything from coarse re-profiling to putting on a literal mirror finish. The Professional model is the one that appears on the video, but is just as suitable for it’s cheaper little brother the Apex.
Hand American – Leather
Some of the nicest stropping leather going. It comes in two flavours, coated or natural, a wide range of sizes (including custom sizes for belt sanders) and is very reasonably priced. I’m including a sample of the natural leather as it takes the CO better.
Possibly not the fastest delivery service going, but it’s not uncommon to find an unexpected gift in with the order.
Also of note is that when ordering you can ask for any available scraps of leather to be included with your order. The scraps aren’t really big enough for a good strop, but very useful for testing out different stropping compounds.
Hand American – Pure Chromium Oxide.
This is the powdered form as I find it easier to apply than the solid bar form. Just put a bit on the leather and rub in with a kitchen paper towel. A little goes a long way, if there is a hint of green on the leather, then it’s probably working. Very good at taking off wire edges and putting on mirror finishes.

Re: Sharpening Extravaganza Pass Around
Yog, how about I send you the coticule stone, and you send it out at the same time, so people get to compare industrial-age and stone-age technology?

Good idea Keith
I'll e-mail you my address. Unless you want to have a peek at any of the items, in which case I'll ship to you first."By the sacred jockstrap of Robert E. Howard ! You'll pay for that Hellspawn !!""

I'll send it to you, but I wonder how many want to be just on the Coticule, and not on the Spider Sticks ?

Re: Sharpening Extravaganza Pass Around
Thanks for this Keith.
If anyone wants to seperate them out it shouldn't be a problem, they can mention it in the post and I'll post seperately.
I noticed your previous offer on the board, and if you like I'll add those names to this pass arround, it was just Peter and Colin if I remember right.
BTW - Did the Pride arrive "Small Package" or just normal post ?
My brother posted it on my behalf, and although he saw them write small package on it, he didn't get any of the dozen or so questions I did and wasn't issued a recipt :dunno:Last edited by Yog; 25-11-03 at 10:37 PM.

That small packet service is really worth using, for Europe. It comes Air ail, in any case (there is *no* packet steamer to Europe, so far as I know), and costs half the price of a normal first class letter.
I know of one more person who is interested in the stone; I'll PM him.
Keith.

Re: Sharpening Extravaganza Pass Around
With Keith's one extra it looks like he's got 4, and after the first day I've got another 2. Which isn't bad because most people here have been sharpening for a while and probably have their own methods.

Re: Sharpening Extravaganza Pass Around
Hi, please count me in. It would be good to compare the sharpmaker with the lansky crock sticks I've been using for years, and the edgepro video will be interesting too after such a good review was posted here on BB a few weeks ago.
Yog - my contact details are the same as I PM'd you for the Military passround but I'll resend just in case.
Thanks, Alick

I may well do! How much? I am totally fed up with my PC. Remember, kiddies, NEVER get in-laws to spec, build and install your system.
