Power hammer tooling ( steel type)

Hi guys what steel do I need to make power hammer tooling ?
I want to make some stamps for Damascus billets . Rise ladder etc .
    Is mild steel ok ?
Or does it really want to be tool steel ?
I'm assuming if its tool steel it better not be heat treated .
    Looking forward to you're replies.
    All the best , matt

    D2: hot work die steel.

See Owen's post lower down. I bow to his far superior experience in power hammer tooling.

No its not .....and to be quite honest I have never heard of D2 being used as a power hammer tooling steel .
I have a feeling that it could be potentially quite dangerous and I would not recommend it.
Mild would be fine for short runs. or case hardened mild .
en8 is cheap and readily available. as is en9 . I would use both of these in a normalised state or sub critically annealed ( very high temper). some of the steels designed for impact applications would also work well (4140) comes to mind.
H13 would make great dies but is more expensive and needs a specialist HT .
have a look on german ebay as they sell all sorts of power hammer tooling for patternation of damascus.
please email me if you want to contact me ,my PM box just gets so full .
