    Lignum vitae d2 neck knife

I recently bought a neck knife from Shing but i wanted to put wood handles on it so i asked him to do 1/4" pin holes and a lanyard hole.
I had a nice piece of Lignum Vitae waiting for the right blade and i got some stainless mosaic pins from Texas knife supplies and the lanyard tube came as a result of lemoneyewash's generosity.
The wood has quite different colour depending on which side you look at and has lovely flowing grain.
I am currently working on a suitable sheath and am thinking of incorporating a left over piece of the original wood slabs, we'll see

Anyway here it is and i hope you like it...

Here it is alongside my Shing folder which arrived last week, it feels a bit like Christmas at the moment

    cheers

Looks very nice. I've got some Lignum Vitae as well that I'm putting on a Felleskap 2 blade and it's interestiong stuff to work with. Did you use anything to finish it?

It seems to generate it's own oil as i worked it but i still finished it with wood oil and a light polish with ren wax.

I noticed it being very oily as I cut it. The only bits I've polished so far are the very front pieces of the slabs and all I did was go through the grades of wet & dry to 1200 and then just polished with a felt polisher on a dremel. It came up with a glass like finish so I'm hoping I'll be able to get the same finish on the rest of the handle.

Did you find the lignum really hard to work? I've always imagined it to be extremely tough stuff.

As far as I know, there is not much point to oiling Lignum, because it is so oily itself that it wont really absorb anything.

Thanks for the kind comments guys

Stew, i didnt find it particularly tough to work although it did clog up the sand paper a bit when i was finishing shaping.

Mojo, i know what you're saying as i did find it pretty oily but it did soak up a few coats of oil which darkened the colour very slightly, dont think it's done any harm though...

    cheers

Very cute knife Neill. I'm a sucker for short utilities, neckers etc anyway but that really is a cracker. Top job.

That is stunning mate, your best work to date IMHO the lignum came out really 'strong'...I will have a look at that this weekend.
