Different ideas mark 3 if we dare.

Ok so the first 2 Different Ideas threads have never ended with everyone showing what they have done.

BUT.... I know that it has got people making knives so i am happy to continue running and administrating them.

I thought this time we would try something a little different. I stead of using just the one bit of wood, you may now use bolsters and spacers. This means that you can cheat if you will and do the easy overboring method, or you can do it the hard way and hole out the bits to be a good fit for the tang etc.

The other difference with this one is that I will chose the blade, and the design of shaft. I will arrange wood from either my own limited stocks, or from a limited range of woods from Per. Please remember that I will be having the whole lot sent to me for me to post out, so i would like to keep it as simple as possible.

This is the blade i have chosen:

I will also supply the same sort of instructions as last time if people want these.

    Cost will be as follows:

    Blade
    wood and bolster
    Postage

As with the previous ones i will make nothing from this deal.

Please state your intrest in this thread and i will look into woods etc when i come back from my easter break. This means that closing entry date will be around 21st APRIL.

Please bare with me regardig prices, i am mailing Per now.

I suggest we keep the wood from the cheaper selection especially if you are a first timer.... mistakes happen you know.

We could of course all select the same wood, and side profile, then add colouring etc, some colouring info will be given underway for those intrested.

AS i said, state interest here.

    Thanks for reading...

    I'm in Dave.

I have almost finished my knife from Different Ideas 2, I promise!! It's just in one of about thirty boxes from my recent house move and I can't face unpacking yet..

    I finished both...
and expected some feedback and comparison with the others.
The reason I got into these was to learn from my mistakes and from other peoples strong and less strong points.I suspect the other members that did their assignment as planned would like some feedback as well.
Those that didn't will have their reasons.

Well I received you last aip files and can give the following comments on the knife you produced.... if it helps?

there should be a slightly more dropped front of the shaft to remove the step.
These steps from shaft to blade are not a problem but the should be equal size both above and below the blade. They are more suited to straight shafted knives.

Personal taste ( mine) says that there should have been a thinner front section to the shafts thickest point and then again towards the back. Although i can barely comment as the task was to your own style from above.
There is glue around the transition blade and shaft and i think that a better pic might show that the hole was realtively wide in relation to the thickness of the blade

Finish is without doubt top class..

You mean when seen from the top?
I've had a more fish like shape on most recent knives except on the Diffs. I thought I'd try something else for a change.

The step is that just for estethics or is there a functional reason as well?
I'll have to measure if there really is a difference on both sides or if it is the pic.

Glue : do you avoid having glue at the front when constructing or do you sand it off later?

Maybe this should be in a seperate thread with pics (with marks on the errors) so all can learn from it?

Well I rarely use epoxy on stick tangs but the method is easy.

You can either dry fir the blade then tape the areas that are not going inside the shaft, or use candle wax or grease to do the same. If i have to use epoxy on a sticktang then i always put some grease around the facing sides before gluing up, this means that the excess epoxy will just peel gently away, or maybe with the assistace of a small scalpel blade.

As for the step, it really has to do with the flow of the knife. Some reagions in the east of Norway make them with a very pronounced step, but the amout from under and over the blade are mm perfect.

That's what I do as well.
I thought it was glue on the wood you meant? Maybe it was some Vaseline?
    I'll check.

    Update :

the step : there is about 1mm difference between upper and lower side.
the glue : there was some glue left from the sealing of the seam between blade and wood. Ironically the glue was on the side with the best fit. The other side had a bit of a gap, small to my standards, big to other's.

Should I throw it away now?

Re: Different ideas mark 3 if we dare.

Can you discuss this on the Different Ideas 2 thread please. Only I want to keep track of other peoples comments and experiences of making the same knife as me - rather than having to jump across threads to find info.

    Thanks

And GGFH666 it'd be nice if you posted up a piccie or two. Just so I can check out the competition
