dannish oil is very good to use on elm as the oil actually hardens

Nico; i'd personally use something other than pure danish oil.
Junkers rustic oil has a good penetrating effect and hardens nicely. If you let it cure and then give a coat of danish the gloss comes on itsown.
I don't usually wax/polish knives, I find they become slippery. Theoil is the most important.
It all depends on what you want.Dave

Godt nytt år people!
I finished two knives last night and treated the handles differently with danish oil ( is it made in Denmark?) The first one i coted it in oil to times and i dried into the wood creating a non shiny surface. Then i took it to the buffer with some PPT wax on it (a lot like carnuba) and now it looks shiny and feels smooth. The other one i treated with another layer Danish Oil and this time it dried on the surface (with a little help af a 60watt bulb)
The finish looks a lot like one another but over time there might be a difference.

danish oil actually comes from the Dan tree. I has nothing to do with Denmark. Where the tree comes from I have no ides.

And there I was, thinking it came from bacon. Thanks for the info, Dave.

I've used 50%/50% mix of turpenine and clarified linseed oil. Just rub it on the handle with a piece of cloth. Repeat until the wood doesn't suck it in anymore. You will apply a number of layers before that happens. On 1 knife I had 10 coatings (1hr work) on another just 5 before the wood was saturated. Then leave it to dry.

Re: what treatment wouldt you give an Elm (wood) handle?
Rather than just rubbing several coats on....If I can , I submerse the handle into a container of oil (like a jar), ..any part of the handle that is exposed I wrap in kitchen paper towel soaked in the oil...then leave it soaking like this for a week or so.....then remove and let it dry.
If using a jar, I wrap cling film around the knife to give it a good as seal as I can to stop the oil thickening...goes like jelly!
Be careful of some oils like Linseed, as I think that rags soaked in it can spontaneously combust...read the labels and dispose of carefuly!!!...formerley known as "coutel".

I have heated few times a big chunk of bee wax in a old beer can and then dipped the handle in for few minutes. Then wipped off extra wax and buff it with carnuba wax.
