    Re: Banning of SAMURAI SWORDS

Any argument against banning needs to be clearly pitched against the absurd logic that suggests that removal of inanimate objects from circulation will foment social change sufficient to stop idiot human beings from harming each other.

    Yamazuru - you're good

If I hadn't repped you already I would do it now.

Your epistles should be sent to the national papers.

That's the best, most coherent rant we've had on BB for a while.

It must be good,we haven't had our esteemed Mods waving the yellow card over the polly tickling aspects.

When law is far from logic or inique, it generates black market, or funny descriptions : no officer, it is not a katana, it's a garden tool for my roses.

More generally, if, due to "electoral comfort laws" people start to consider that law isn't somethimg to respect, what will be the limit ?
Here, we say "If you want to keep respect from your men, don't give fool orders that nobody will execute."

    Re: Banning of SAMURAI SWORDS

today in the daily record is a story where a boy took a switchblade to school.
i have no doubt that this incident will lead to further cries in the media for bans etc.
despite the fact that the knife in question was already illegal to own.

all knife crime is covered by existing legislation. there is no need for new laws on the subject.

Thanks for the kudos, but to be honest the sooner the nationals forget about knives and get back to bird flu (last months paranoiac media frenzy of choice) the better. Maybe they can try to introduce a ban on unnecessarily sharp chickens? I'm still looking for a low-key way to ensure my perfectly legitimate right to quietly carry on making knives without being vilified or legislated against, but I am beginning to suspect it'll need to be sooner rather than later.

And I would like to categorically apologise for tickling any pollys; it was not my intent, I just needed to get the burden of recent media/nanny state idiocy regarding knives off my chest. My bad.

Exactly. To be honest, most existing legislation would be sufficient if properly enforced. The recent "anti-terror" laws are a classic example. Popular media as a springboard for policy; thats what we've been working toward for all these years apparently. Oops. I'm off again. . .

In the absence of adequate parenting, is there no formal, say, police or government sponsored programme to explain to these little pillocks that carrying a knife is not cool, they're not a viable defensive strategy or, for that matter, that they ought to stop thinking that stabbing each other is an appropriate way to comport themselves?

    Re: Banning of SAMURAI SWORDS

I think the govt of whatever colour would not want to ban swords. Not because they would not want to or have any opposition to but it would leave them with less things to ban in the future to show how tough they are. Notice when they banned handguns and semi auto rifles, they did not just ban all guns so it gioves them the opportunity to ban whatever is being used in the next sensational crime.

I don't think we can blame the media for demonising knives, guns or large dogs, papers respond to people's fears and prejudices and frequently reinforce and feed on it.

Unlike our forefathers, guns and knives have played a diminishing role in people's lives. People used to work with knives all the time to make shoes, harvest crops or cut food. None of these things need to be done by a person anymore so people only see knives as weapons rather than tools. Most people don't even cook most of the time so even kitchen knives are alien.

very well put yamazaru- couldn't have said it better myself. i have already had my air revolver stolen from me by the government, now i'll probably have my very expensive katana taken away too

on a side note, i quote:

'I mean, if you own Dido's last album, even though the mere mention of her name makes me want to climb into a wheelie bin full of irate pit-vipers'

it may cheer you up to know that i am a body piercer, and as such, i am able to inform you that there is a male genital piercing called a 'dydoe'
how we laughed when she first hit the scene....
hopefully now, the mere mention of her name will make you chuckle instead!

    From the Exeter Newspaper:

If that means that together we help prevent a single death or injury, it will have been worth it
I love this quote. It was very popular amongst the gun control crowd here in Canada. The logical extension means that everything more risky than sitting at home watching the telly should be controlled or banned.

Which is more in line with the rather less salubrious rhetoric I restrained myself from posting, which involved doing something with a breadboard and 4 inch nails, rather than listen to her music

Thats awesome, isn't it? Fabulous. Why not put the entire human race into a freezer for the next four centuries; that'll definitely prevent death and injury.

These people give me the proper fear; the idea of anyone determined to deny the absolute certainty of their getting killed by something in the end by sheltering themselves (and everyone else) to the point of life-denial is possibly the scariest thing I can think of (apart from snakes. On a plane.)

Can't they just settle for spending the rest of their "life" in front of a telly and leave the rest of us to it?
