    Leatherwork Edge Tool

A very nice looking leatherwork edge tool, its used for taking off the sharp corners on a piece of cut leather. When its then polished up, it helps give the item a nice finished look.

They obviously work, but how?!! Sorry if it seems a bit simple, but I've never used one or seen one in other than a picture

    Re: Leatherwork Edge Tool

When you cut a piece of leather you end up with a square edge and this can feel quite sharp. Usually a nice smooth edge is needed. These edge tools have a tiny built in blade just a mm or so across. This is sliced along the edge of the leather to take off the corner. This gives it a rounded look.

Does this help? I can do a drawing if it will help? I forget sometimes that people are maybe not as familiar with the tools as I am

    Re: Leatherwork Edge Tool

The picture on ebay shows two ridges as it were. I take it these are placed onto the leather on one face and the side, and the cutting edge is uppermost? Therefore the tool in the picture is in fact upside down? Or am I being dim?!!

The blade of the item is actually set down between these two piccies. Let me see if I can do a picture for you

    Re: Leatherwork Edge Tool

Cheers Tiffers! I actually want to have a whirl at some leatherwork. I would love to do a sheath for an old knife thats been in the family longer than syphilis (Blackadder joke!) and I would love to have a go at the flask that was in the Bushcraft mag this issue. I'd need to buy all the necessary kit, so it's not happening this month as I've bought a UCO candle lantern and a BRK&T Fox River, both from across the water, massively going over budget for personal spends for this month!!!

    Re: Leatherwork Edge Tool

Right, prepare for a couple of large slightly out of focus pictures.....my camera isnt the best one for closeups.

This is a picture of the business end of the 2 I have at home at the moment.

As you can see, the bladed section is set down into the body of the tool. You are actually looking down onto the top of the tool. To give you an idea of their size, the smaller one has a blade about 1mm wide.

In this picture you can see the tool running along the sharp edge of the leather.

And in this one, you can see how it rounds the edge of the leather.

Hope this helps! Sorry about the quality of the piccies, they were not easy to get!

Aaah, it seems so obvious now! Thanks Tiffers, they convey the use of them and that's good for me. Do they come in different sizes or are they all the same?
