L6 spanners how can you tell

apparently alot of spanners are made of L6 this seems like a good sorce of recyclable steel as you can find boxes full off old spanners at any car boot.
But how can i tell if they are L6 and not S2 or any other alloy, Im geussing its going to be older ones , Not crappy cast ones and probly not ones with CHROM-VANDIUM riten down the side
I got this info from the junkyard steel site so its US biased info so maybee its only american 'wrenches' KingDick is an amercan mkae i belive?

Snap on is an American make but I don't think anyone would recycle a snap on spanner they have a life time guarantee
As for other spanners I have no idea what there made out of , but I suspect most at the car boot will be the chrome vandium variety
