Re: The Legal Slipjoint Sticky
Sorry if this is already mentioned in this thread, but I couldn't see it anywhere

Early on a picture of the SAK solo was posted. I have just bought one of these with a view to modifying it, and they have increased the size. The blade is now 3 1/4 inches measured from handle to point so it isn't a legal edc anymore.
I did wonder what was going on when I found one on a cheap site listed as 108mm closed. Anyway it was still listed on the Heinnie Haynes as 91mm so I bought one from there. It was actually 108mm closed, and with the longer blade, so I have shortened the handle and blade suitably.
So beware illegal non-locking SAKs

Re: The Legal Slipjoint Sticky
I think that is a very sensible attitude. After all the idea of carrying a SAK is that it shouldn't draw attention to itself if a policeman happens to want to search you. I love my UKPK, but I've stopped taking it out of the house, because of the attitude people have if they see it.You are quite right but I think it's wise to keep the whole blade under 3" if you are in any way concerned about being stopped. Arguing the finer points of the law is more than likely to get you a visit to the police station to discuss it with the desk sergeant!

I agree that the Spyderco UKPK is somewhat intimidating. This is partly the reason for me starting a thread on EDC one-handed opening folders-I can't really see me with a SAK though.

Some Sowbellies for your delectation.
This almost serpentine pattern is often thicker at one end - (making it look a bit like a sow's belly!). Usually made up as some order of stockman (clip, lambsfoot & a spey), and frequently with near persian blades, there is in fact quite a lot of variation in the combination and forms of the blades. Also, as it refers to the handle shape, it is also possible to find copperheads, trappers etc as sowbellies.

Re: The Legal Slipjoint Sticky
go on buy one you know you want to
I used my Schatt&Morgan in a cafe today to open a cardboard sandwich box, and was asked by a an old Lady on the next table if she could see my knife, so I closed it and passed it to her, she turned it over in her hand and said " my late husband used to carry a knife like this , you don't see many of them nowadays do you",
So I ended up having lunch with the old dear and discussing how Society has changed since the 60's

your not wrong, they do have an air of respectability that tac folders and the like can only dream of.
once i,ve got the new year out the way, i,ll get a few.
are there any Schatt&Morgan importers in the uk or is it a case of buying from the yanks and fretting over the customs charges?

the CUTTING edge is still only 3" with a 1/4" of choil before the handle. I believe the law does state cutting edge rather than blade length - but someone may be along to correct me
