    Scythe sharpener wanted

    Hi all

If anyone coming to Leeds can bring me a scythe sharpening stone (you know, the double conical shaped ones), please let me know what you want money wise? I need it for my billhook.
Or if anyone who reguarly(sp?) uses billhooks has a better method, would you let me in on it?

As an aside, are these stones usually used dry, or lubricated? I assume the former, but I've seen the latter, particularly once on TV when there was an article about a chap in Wales or Ireland (I forget which) still quarrying the stone & making sharpeners.

I don't have one to spare I'm afraid - but they were traditionally used wet afaik. They were often carried on the harvesters belt in a cows horn full of water. you can see a similar one for sale here:http://www.dick.biz/ go to english version - tools- garden tools- replacement parts and accessories and then go on to the second page.

You need the flat version of the cigar shape stone you mention , it is finer. The one you mention is for scythes / grass hooks , too coarse for your billhook. Spit for lube . Was using my brushing hook and stone Suday to clear up foliage from a large tree that fell on my garden last week .

Cheers Paul. Do you know where I can get one please?

If anyone can bring one to Leeds, I'd be most grateful. I'm getting tired of internet buying.

Let me have a look in a local shop in the village , Berrycroft stores, Horticultural sundriesmen , they will have them. This is a great shop so I'm glad of the excuse to go in , I will get a price for you .

    Wait a minute , I could just call them couldn't I ? Doh!

Man at the shop says they are @ £5.00. Let me know if you want one .I can post it on .
