I have the Mosgeil (sp?) extreme bush shirt with a zip front. I love it, they are warm, pretty windproof & water repelent but not waterproof. It's taken a couple of drenchings & stood up well because the water tends not to get through the wool but sits on the outside - it will creep through in places eventually though, maybe 1 hour in heavy rain, but it will still keep you warm.

It wont be as wind/water proof as the goretex though. I'd be tempted to add a water/windproof layer if you plan on being out for long periods in the rain. If you have the budget then Ventile is second to none & will out breathe goretex by a long way.

Something like the West Winds Ventile smock, well worth the money in my experience - I've been out in horizontal rain on the South Downs in winter and felt none of it. Smock + Guernsey fishermans jumper or a thick polar neck is a great combo.

    hope that helps.

Endorse evrything said. The only prob with the mosgeil is that the skirt will hang below the waterproof outer (Ventile gore-tex whatever) and will wick up a little after a prolonged exposure to driving rain. Swanndri do a ranger shirt which is cheaper but excellant and works really well under a ventile. I always prefer a series of thin layers to one thick layer.

    Cheers

    hmm.. interesting ..

bison bush craft or SAS ventile smock (+ cheapo paclite for real downpours)
    swandri shirt or fleece jacket
    shirt
suave m & S black polo neck style

that ought to cover autumn and winter.. stil deciding .. but am a bit shocked that a ventile jacket costs more than a a goretex xcr

    thanks for all the help

It is way better than goretex to be fair.

Quiet, 100% cotton so more spark/fire resistant, breaths way way better (I've tested it against goretex & eVent & it performs easily as well as the latter) is waterproof without any need for easily ruinable coatings & seam seals.

    Um... £170, I think.
Some really, really nice design differences between it & the West Winds.

    Re: swanndri

I just bought myself a goretex i.a. jacket from berghaus (cornice ii) and am very happy with it. I wanted something i could wear over a suit as well as normally and i really like it. perhaps not what you're looking for though

why don't more people buy ventile and why don't more companies use ventile. to be honest i've never really heard of it. is it really truly 100% waterproof. the sites on which i've read about say it is but when they list its properties it actually says weatherproof
