Re: I have a question about G.P.S?
Hi Andy,
Very kind of you to share your experience once again.
My ideas/questions..
I would like a Garmin 60cx, for its mapping ability in a hand held and I also hope to use it for autorouting in the car...
I need maps for Europe, USA, Canada, and I suppose further afield when I get the chance...I was going to put USA and Canada on a 2Gb card, all of Europe on another and then see how I get on after that... does that sound like it would work?
Do maps overlay one another?
Can I upload maps as I require them without loosing what is already there?
Can I put in POI such as a campsite, that will be on the map for the next time I pass in that direction? In other words it will show up on the map and I don't need to remember them all?
As units are a lot cheaper in the USA, is there any drawback with buying one from there, with USA maps on it and loading Europe on a 2Gb card?
Will the address search feature in v9 work on the 60cx?
Do you know of any special offers that I could perhaps make use off?
Do Garmin have any re-conditioned units for sale?
Thanks again and best Regards,

With the 60CX, it is easy to use pre loaded map cards. Simply programme with the required mapping for the area you are in. Then tell the unit to use mapping from the external card rather than the pre-instaled mapping. The internal mapping will remain safe until you use it again.
Pre programmed maps for Europe and USA are availoable.
POI's are stored on the unit rather than the map card, so therefor should appear on maps when you are near to them.
I do not forsee any difficulties in using a USA unit with an additional UK/Europe map card.
I am unsure if address search feature works in a 60CX. I will ask.Quoth the server: "404."

Re: I have a question about G.P.S?
I've just bought an open canoe and would like to buy a waterproof GPS system, one that doesn't cost the earth. I have no knowledge of GPS systems, is there one that will do GPS, Sat Nav and be survive an occasional dunk under water?

Just incase anyone is interested, there is 3rd party software available which can make the Metroguide software autoroute in your unit, giving the same functionality as the City Navigator products.

I believe the Garmins are waterproof except the battery compartment which is only water resistant. I've used GPSIII+ on an open boat console without problems and the Etrex Summit in pouring rain for hours ditto without problems. I think that if you submerse them though the battery compartment will suffer water ingress to some degree.

Re: I have a question about G.P.S?
Well if it's for a canoe, then detailed marine and OS maps would be useful ...no? If so, then go for one that supports mapping directly on the unit. Check out the range, there is a B&W version that is cheaper than the csx I think. But look at the cost of maps as well. Garmin city navigator is needed for street mapping (works very well indeed) - though remember these units dont do voice prompts - which is a blessing IMO. Also check out the marine maps and the OS maps. It adds up to a lot of dosh.
Also check out RAM mounts for them.
Top kit, but top dollar too.
Alternatively, use paper maps and the bottom of the range 60 series just for grid reference and basic data, and a dedicated car GPS for auto stuff.
Better is the first option, but it comes at a BIG price.δxδp≥h/4π

Re: I have a question about G.P.S?
Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work for me, I have spent hours trying to get sense out of it. I must have a to later version of mapsource, or be doing something else wrong, just seems to stop instead of grabbing the .img files and lets mapsource load the standard files.
I'm suposed to be visiting the USA later this year and was looking forward to turn by turn, intead of proper maps but no routing. anyone any ideas where I'm going wrong?

Does your actual unit support autorouting?
