Spyderco Hossom range - model to be decided.....

After having seen the pics of Frank's new toy, I really want to play with one of the new Spyderco / Hossom knives.

Now, I think that the Forrester is slightly too big to have a wide appeal so was looking at either the Forager or Woodlander.

    Here are all the stats:

    FB16P - Jerry Hossom Forester PlainEdge - $374.95
    Length - 15 9/16" / 395mm
    Blade Length - 9 1/8" / 232mm
    Weight - 16.8oz. / 456g
    Steel - N690Co
    Handle - Green Micarta
    ETA - December

    FB17P - Jerry Hossom Forager PlainEdge - $339.95
    Length - 14" / 356mm
    Blade Length - 7 1/2" / 190mm
    Weight - 14.7oz. / 417g
    Steel - N690Co
    Handle - Green Micarta
    ETA - December

    FB18P - Jerry Hossom Woodlander PlainEdge - $289.95
    Length - 12 5/8" / 321mm
    Blade Length - 6 3/32" / 155mm
    Weight - 13.4oz. / 380g
    Steel - N690Co
    Handle - Green Micarta
    ETA - December

    FB19P - Jerry Hossom Dayhiker PlainEdge - $229.95
    Length - 10 1/2" / 266mm
    Blade Length - 4 3/4" / 121mm
    Weight - 7.6oz. / 215g
    Steel - N690Co
    Handle - Green Micarta
    ETA - December

    Any one interested?

I'm waiting on some prices for both models and I don't know what availability is like either so it may be a total no-go from that front.

Get your name down and add a vote for which model if you're interested.

Can I ask why you have only picked two out of the three remaining in the Hossom line up?

This is what Jerry Hossom himself had to say about which models he would choose:

Considering it is MUCH more than one day later, I'm still not sure.

If two, certainly the Forester and Dayhiker. They are very different knives in most every respect and compliment each other well.

If one, probably the 6-incher for general use. It would really depends on the shelter issue, and how important that might be to your anticipated needs. The 7-1/2 incher is really a smaller version of the Forester. The 6-incher falls into its own category of a pretty good general purpose knife.

The Dayhiker is in a class of its own. Almost everytime I make a new design, I push it by making versions that are both larger and smaller than I think the design should tolerate. When I made the Dayhiker, thinking it would be too small to serve the purposes I anticipated when designing the larger versions, I found I was right, but the resulting knife was in itself a good tool. It makes a very nice hunter and utility knife, and that is not what I was thinking when the prototype, the 7-1/2 incher was made. The Forester was not the largest. I also made a 12 incher, but that was clearly too large to be practically useful.

Such is the madness of a knifemaker...

Even I can't remember all their names, but that's mostly a matter of age.
I would agree with him - the largest and the smallest - the two in the middle will probably not sell that well.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst!

The big thing that puts me off the forester is the sheath. It's a bit too big.
I'm hoping that the forager will compete well against it for chopping ability (although never going to be as good) but in a more easily transportable package. It's a size I haven't really played with but would like to.

The Dayhiker was omitted because knives around that size are more common and I want this passaround to be about the bigger knives in the range.

I kept the Woodlander in because of this that Jerry said:

I fancy a go at the big one, I might end up buying the Dayhiker anyway.

When the only tool you have is a hammer, you have to treat every problem like its a nail.

Now where did i put that hammer...?

Woodlander for me, if only because I've lots of khukuri for big blades for wood.
Just read Martyns rules so I think I'm ruled out.

That's not a law, just a guide. We'll see how it goes.
