Re: Blade Grinding (My way) lot’s of Pic’s
Ya know, Jeff, I'm wondering, it seems as if you'd have to have those Vise-Grips pretty tight to keep the blade blank from moving. If this is the case, doesn't it leave marks on it?

Yes you need to keep it tight so it doesn't move. I originally just made sure I clamped where the handle will cover it. I am now trying it with a peice of heavy leather glued to the jaw of the vice grips that touches the blade. akraven

Re: Blade Grinding (My way) lot’s of Pic’s
Thought you might like to see the other type of jig that I use, its on the lines of what you are trying to do, instead of having an adjustable table simply have an adjustable jig, this is the one that I use for bigger blades on the big grinder, made from a 3x2x3/8’’ block with a 3’’ hinge riveted onto it, then a 3x2x1/8 plate is riveted onto the other part of the hinge, a smaller hinge is then riveted further up on the vertical plate, an 6mm bit of threaded rod riveted to it that then goes through a bracket riveted to the base plate a nut either side then allows the jig to be set at any chosen angle, the clamp section is lined with 3mm leather co the blade can be very firmly clamped without any damage, the upper bolts are to tighten the clamp the lower ones are to set the distance for the thickness of metal you are using,
Here’s the jig at the grinder

Front view of jig with blade in place

Rear view of jig with blade in place

Close up of construction

Hope that’s of some use to you
Cheers for now Aly

Re: Blade Grinding (My way) lot’s of Pic’s
Aly, this looks quite a bit more complicated than the one I was starting to make, but I think it's exactly what I need!
Now, what did I do with those hinges I had?
Thanks fer posting this!

AKRaven, I appreciate you postin' pics of your's, but I really think this one will work out better for me.

I'm glad I haven't put my Mig Welder away yet. I'll put it together w/that.
Aly! How, exactly, do you use the lower bolts to set for the thickness of the blade?

Re: Blade Grinding (My way) lot’s of Pic’s
Aly! What're the dimensions on those pieces of steel those hinges are attached to? The reason I ask is, I decided to go/4" hinges.

Nevermind! It's another day, and I suppose I should've re-read your post before I asked that.Last edited by Mack1; 31-05-07 at 05:07 PM. Reason: Because some days I'm just a dumbass.

Re: Blade Grinding (My way) lot’s of Pic’s
So, Aly, I repeat, how do you use the lower bolts for adjustment? Is the "outer plate(faceplate)" threaded?
I don't see them coming through the other side.
I'm curious.

Aly, one more thing. Would you have any qualms about instructions for this jig being posted somewhere else? PM me on that. Thanks!Last edited by Mack1; 01-06-07 at 02:39 PM.

Re: Blade Grinding (My way) lot’s of Pic’s
Right then let see if I can explain this a bit better, if you look at the picture ‘side view of jig’,

there are two upper and two lower bolts, the upper ones are threaded into the backplate and are used to tighten the front plate onto the blade, ( the red bit of metal is the blade) the two lower bolts are threaded into the frontplate and are adjusted so the frontplate remains parallel with the backplate when a blade is put into it, (if they weren’t there the front plate would simply tighten at an angle and not hold the blade secure) hope that makes sense
Cheers Aly

Re: Blade Grinding (My way) lot’s of Pic’s
Yep! That definetly makes sense. If you hadn't put it this way, I probably wouldn't have realised for a while that the upper bolts are threaded to the "backplate"!
Don't know why, but I hadn't noticed that.
