    Poor Man's Granite Surface Plate?

I notice that in the Kitchen section of Morrison's they're selling something called a granite trivet for 4. It's got a nice flat polished top. Depending how much precision you need, it might make a good surface plate, or at least a flat surface for sanding on. I didn't buy one at the time, but I think I'll go back and get one.

There's a range of granite stuff in Morrison's, but the trivet seemed the best size/price ratio.

A bit creepy but try asking at your local funeral stone masons, its where i was told to go for a kitchen block, i'm sure they could get a piece of stone flat enough

An undertaker is usually a good source for brass screws and fittings!

I just had granite worktops installed in our kitchen and I asked the owner of the granite company to cut a 30cm square slab for me. Fantastic! Well...only useful if you're getting granite worktops!!

There used to be a granite dump near me where there were lots of cobbles, huge polished facings and other odd bits and pieces. Tons of the stuff and ideal for the garden but only a small amount of stuff that would do for kitchen boards.

They moved it all a few years back iirc, unfortunately.

Turned them into trivets and sold them to Morrisons?

Seriously, I have a fireplace maker near me and they use granite. Another
    possible source?

You will never find out unless you ask.

I did go back and buy one of these. It's as flat as my steel straight-edge, despite the worrying "hand made" claim on the pack.
