Seki-Cut Folding Katana
I've just received my latest package from Joe which included a Seki-Cut SC-138 "Folding Katana". I have taken some of my own pictures, but they are no where near as good as those on the Seki direct site, so please have a look at:
http://www.seki-cut.com/Sekicut/SC-138p.htm
There are two main interesting things about this knife:
1. The canvas micarta handle, which is not sealed on the outside and so has a soft feel to it - it's like haveing a grip made of rough cotton. A closer examination seems to show that it is sealed lower down in the micarta. I'll be interested to see how this wears over time, and once it gets wet.
2. The blade, which is of AUS-10 and 3" long (no, not quite the length of a normal katana
) . The "hollow grind" stops before the tip so that it's kept strong - this looks very marked in the first photo, but in reality there's a smooth transition - see the bottom right picture. There's a false edge on the back of the blade near the tip. The curve of the blade is really gracefull.
There is a removable pocket clip for tip-down carry.
As you would expect the blade arrived arm-hair shaving sharp, the few cutting tasks that I have used it for (paper, cardboard, clothing tags and an orange..) it's dispatched with ease. It's now another of my firm favorates for about the house carry, but is not quite discrete enough for me to have around sheeple.Stephen

It looks very good Stephen, rather like your Spydie Vesuvius but I prefer those Bob Lum Encounters on the Seki-Cut home page! Those are seriously cool!
How much was it through Joe?
:thanks:
Oh, and before I forget, can you thank Mrs63 for the 'Sophie' you bought for Sam? She has discovered that she can grip stuff and it is perfect for little hands! It her number one favourite grippy thing!

Danzo,
It was £75 less 15% for February = £63.75 from Joe. I know that the price on the Seki Direct site is now a lot less, but I've no idea what they would charge for postage, nor whether it would get additional customs charges.
Glad that Sam likes the giraffe, we haven't yet heard of a little one that doesn't like Sophie.Stephen

Re: Seki-Cut Folding Katana
Seki has dropped their pricing recently as well on the knife. So my cost has also declined..I can match their US pricing which they use now at this time.
cheers,
Joe

Re: Seki-Cut Folding Katana
I'll have to call on the Hattori line.... even a quick google search for the part numbers turn up only the Seki site and a couple of other japanses websites. It may be only available direct from them.
cheers,
Joe

Re: Seki-Cut Folding Katana
ok I can get ...well my distributor can... the hattori line, one small catch though, in order for them to pick up that particular line they only need a order for 300 knives....errrrrr my pockets don't go that deep.
So looks best for that line is direct with seki-cut.
cheers,
Joe

10a steel is excellent, certainly a bit better than 440C in my experience

Re: Seki-Cut Folding Katana
Are the knife materials durable enough to be used for camping? Also, how has that unprotected micarta held up? thanks.

Re: Seki-Cut Folding Katana
10a should hold up very well for camping. It holds a good edge and is quite corrosion resistant. No experience with any type of micarta however, sorry. :dunno:
