Re: Kopassus Spesial Forces Fs Dagger

    Wow! Thanks for showing.

I saw a knife just like this in a shop in Bangkok and was told it was some kind of Indonesian special forces knife by the guy there.

It was an upmarket weapons shop in a small modern mall, and he seemed a decent guy, but I thought it was still probably some sort of fake as I'd never even heard of such a knife.

It was expensive, in Thai terms, but seeing this I wonder if it was real? If it was I'll be kicking myself all night for not buying it.

    Thanks again.

Now you make me feel pain!

I do remember it was marked Solingen, and a German makers name, but more than that I forget as it was six years ago.

It was on sale for 4500 Baht, which at the time was about £75.00.

Thing is of course that after many weeks in Thailand your conception of money gets a bit weird. When a hotel room costs 30 Baht a night, a meal for two 10 Baht and expensive Thai beer is 60 Baht a pint for Chang you lose any context of value.

The antique Burmese Dha I bought up on the border in the Golden Triangle was 600 Baht and I thought I had spent a fortune at the time.

I've had some dealings with Kopassus.

You could always tell them from regular troops.

    They had boots.

This could be of some interest to you regarding your KOPASSUS F/S.
Firstly they are indeed very well made daggers.
    The sheath could be better.
This dagger is an exact copy of the polished stainless steel Carl Schlieper presentation grade Commando Dagger (replicated down to the eye brand stamping etched on these blades!) with additional KOPASSUS insignia etched.
Make no mistake that these KOPASSUS eye brand F/S daggers are made hand made (almost to custom level) in a particular area of Bandung, Indonesia.
And yes, that black stuff you find on the blade is a matt black epoxy paint, and not pakerized or gun blued. I haven't a clue as to what type of carbon steel/iron is utilized for the blade, but I do know that it isn't stainless at all. You would be pleased to note that the guard and handle are machined from a single block of brass (just like the Solingen, Eye Brand original). And the rat tail blade tang is probably about half the handle length. I don't know if it's its affixed with any sort of epoxy. But I reckon its strong enough to stand throws. Because for one the blade stock is thicker than those found on your regular Sheffield made F/S daggers. The blade is profiled in such a way that it progressively gets thinner towards the point. It's balance is such that it's probably how a fighting dagger should correctly weigh in the hand.
In all, these are the highest grade production F/S daggers afforded to men of the KOPASSUS. There are also less expensive versions which have concentric ring handles much like the 3rd pattern F/S handle. But if one must have a KOPASSUS dagger this (Bandung eye brand) would be the absolute must have.

On the other hand, as much as I don't intend to shotgun your thread - I figured you and anyone else here, might be equally keen to see what Indonesia's closest neighbour has to counter KOPASSUS.
The Malaysian Armed Forces (Angkatan Tentera Malaysia - ATM) runs commando courses too.
And the Malaysian army (Tentera Darat - Land Forces aka ARMY) has Special Forces capability in the form of the Rejimen Gerak Khas (Special Forces Regiment).
Here are some picture links highlighting the proud moment in which Army commandos get their Green Beret (the trainees would spring out from RIB's on to a beach; commence a mock battle, blow up a few targets and then assemble for the ceremony note that the bush hat/floppy hats worn here)
The Green Beret is placed on head by a senior officer (a marron beret shows that he is with a para brigade, but a commando none the less).
The hilt of a 3rd pattern F/S dagger is partially visible to the right of officers under arm.
Incidentally, these are standard Sheffield made F/S 3rd pattern daggers with no markings.
A empty scabbard (a Korean made US-M8 sheath with "GGK" (Grup Gerak Khas imprinted on reverse side) which is worn on the webbing strap is then fitted by the senior officer with this UK made 3rd pattern F/S
    -http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b251/zetabranch/komando/DSC08115.jpg
And with that, these proud soldiers officially become commandos
    -http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b251/zetabranch/komando/DSC08106.jpg
As an incentive the best student is awarded a bronzed/nickle plated F/S dagger glassed encased presentation.

kopassus was also involved in 1997-8 ethnic cleansing...sadly.

Krizzard, you are right - Malaysia has the Rejimen Gerak Khas. Singapore too has special forces capability - the Commandos, the Naval Diving Unit as well as the elite unit called the SOF (Special Operations Force) which is modelled after the SEALS or SAS. I believe Thailand has its Royal Commandos as well and Ranger units as the Singapore Armed Forces trains regularly with them.

Many of the South East Asian countries have modelled their special forces units after Green Beret / SEALS as well as the SAS, with a mighty heap of influence from the Israelis (in the case of Singapore).

Re: Kopassus Spesial Forces Fs Dagger

That is the best postwar FS style dagger I have ever heard of. It has always drove me crazy that no one made a decent copy just ringed versions. Even
the Strider custom that cost double what a real FS dagger would was a no 3.
You would think a company would have made something exactly like this 20 years ago. 199$ US dollars would be a reasonable price(I don't quite get pounds sorry) with a modern kydex sheath.

For the best FS replica made you have to go to www.nzknives.co.nz. Peter can sort you out with whatever you want. He even has a North American agent

Ok, all folks have meanings about different knifes Krissard.

This dagger came from a friend of a friend of mine. And he have a foot inside the Kopassus . So, I have no
    doubt that it is original.
He lives in Indonesia as well.

As far as I know, this is the standard knife that Kopassus use for general
purpose. But it is possible that they make different knives for particular
    operations like you say.

Anyway....the knife i have are well made and the balance is perfekt . The blade are sharp and very good quality and the crossguard have the same length like an orginal Wilkinson FS dagger. The sheat are well made of leather.

    Have a nice day.

Does anyone have some photos of this Eye brand repro version mentioned as the inspiration for the Koppasus dagger? I am just getting into the FS daggers and need all the info I can find.

Just from an aesthetic standpoint those black daggers look great don't they?

Some info from a internet site :

    Eye Brand Knives:
We carry the full Eye Brand knife line
Eye Brand knives, sometimes called German Eye, have been Hammer forged in Solingen Germany by the Carl Schlieper family for over 100 years. Eye Brand Knives still use forged blades.
Reviewer's note: Great using knives with hammer forged steel. They don't go to alot of trouble to fit and finish. Expect minor imperfections. Handle pins are not domed and spun, just hammered down. Best carbon steel around. A favorite with Ranchers in Texas!

Hammer Forged blades: Eye Brand Knives is one of the few companies that still uses the age old method of hammer forging its blades. Most traditional knives today are cold stamped, but Eye Brand still forges the steel to shape. Hammer forging compresses and realigns the blade steel's grain structure, thereby increasing the toughness and edge holding characteristics of the knife blade. It is a more costly and time consuming process, but worth the effort.

They don't sell the FS commemorative anymore then?
Does anyone have one or even a photo and some info on the FS dagger they made?
Forging is cool but it really does not make for a better knife. Really it is the quality of steel and the heat treat as well as good geometry for it's intended task.
