Re: Maxped. Fatboy - Is it just me?

Schwert makes an excellent point, as always.

But I do wonder why so many of you seem to have foregone the the traditional 'pocket' in favour of a very expensive manbag.

I have these 'pockets' in all of my trousers and jackets. I find them excellent for putting stuff in. And because these 'pockets' are distributed proportionately around my body I can find them quite easily by moving my hands.

I've never needed to carry a Manbag. I do carry a Babybag full of nappies, wipes, spare clothes, dummies, yoghurt coated raisins and emergency Maltesers, but that's because I have two children under four.

    But a Manbag?

    Nah......

Umm, me too. My change 'um bag is a nice wax cotton job from Barbour.

Just please tell me that nobody is really, honestly trying out anything called a Fatboy. For the love of anything holy please........

Ahhhh, that maybe is the issue.

Maybe some Maxpedition Trousers are on the list....completely great looking, hardman tough, never-wear-out, OD green..........non-functional pants.

The cocoon pouch is rather handy for things.

The rolly-polys are good too (not a maxpedition design though). I think those are all that have stuck with me.

I tend to carry messenger bags now, simple and tough with lots of room for shopping. I find I look less like an effeminate mercenary and that suits me fine.

Re: Maxped. Fatboy - Is it just me?

i hate having assorted stuff in my trouser pockets, so i keep front pockets clear for my hands, and you can only carry so much on a belt or a keyring.

Having stuff rattling around in cargo pockets is another no-no for me.

I'd suggest carrying less but i don't think this is the right place for such a suggestion and anyway it makes me feel bad.

Re: Maxped. Fatboy - Is it just me?

I use my FB Jumbo for high seat shooting. It is handy being able to carry everything (Rifle, binos, water, grub etc.) up the high seat without having to do multiple ascents/descents. I can also clip it to the high seat when in position and grab stuff as I need it. The only no no is that puzzlingly useless velcro strap that goes over the water bottle pouch, deer can hear that from miles away . I wouldn't want to carry it any great distance for reasons already mentioned here but for what I got it for it does the job

The occasions when I want something like the Fatboy (except one that works) is when I'm not wearing something with voluminous pockets, i.e when on holiday and wearing shorts, t-shirt and that's about it . A rucksack would be too big, too sweaty and too awkward to get things out of.

I've got to say I am exceedingly surprised by the response this thread has received, considering the apparent popularity of these Fatboys I'm not sure anybody has come along and said 'It works for me'

Re: Maxped. Fatboy - Is it just me?

I've hardly ever carried my Maxpedition Fatboy. I found it too tactickle-looking and the main compartment was too small.
I moved on to a Nomad Travel "Indy bag", which is a nice simple design but looks a bit geeky. I never felt 100% comfortable carrying in town, or to work.

My current "manbag" is a Tom Bihn Medium Cafe Bag, and I am very happy with it. It is a simple design, very light and soft when empty but has a good capacity for items of "sub daysack literage". I generally carry a keys, wallet, cheque book, notepad, a couple of pens, small FAK, 500ml of water, a Montane Featherlite smock, plus bits and bobs for my youngest daughter.

The Cafe Bag is reviewed here:
    http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/review/tom_bihn_cafe_bag
    http://macmentor.org/switch/article....41202235353877

They must have updated the design since those reviews, as mine has a better strap pad (which is removable) and the strap is adjusted by two buckles attached to the side of bag.

Re: Maxped. Fatboy - Is it just me?

After spending about $150 on my two Fatboys it is sort of hard get to the point that the money was wasted.

I have bought a lot of various backpacks, shoulder bags, camera bags, bum bags, and belt pouches and I cannot think of any that did not at least satisfy some real or imagined need that justified their purchase. Many of these have fallen by the wayside but none did not at least work for a while.

Fatboy one, (the standard size), seemed likely to be perfect, but its too small size was really disappointing. Naturally when the Jumbo was introduced I was lead willingly, by the hand, down the garden path, as surely it would be the right one....

But I am now forced to realize the money went down a rathole. I am left holding the bag

Re: Maxped. Fatboy - Is it just me?

personally I HATE stuff in my pockets. I love my fatboy, perhaps thats because I am one!!!!!! Nevertheless it fits me, carries all I ever want to carry, and appears indestuctable. Down side is the slightly tactical look(mine is black) and the really abrasive edges. Otherwise I love the thing

Yep, that's the kind of image I'm trying to project.

Re: Maxped. Fatboy - Is it just me?

I've been looking at Fatboys a lot. My local HW store sells them. Looked at them several times, tried them on, etc, but never got myself to buy one.

Reasons, it's a bit too small and it looks way too tactical. I can't see where would I ever use it. In the city, no way. In forrest, no - I'd take my bigger rucksack for sure.

As I must wear suit to work anyway, just can't think of wearing anything tactical looking. That would look rather sad. Therefore I still carry my good old Timbuk2 messenger bag daily. I can fit all my normal stuff (books, papers, iPod, shades, first aid kit) and some folders, leatherman, torches, shitloads of paracord, rubberbands, plastic ties, etc. The bag looks friendly, casual and goes with any clothes anywhere. As it's made of ballistic nylon, it seems to last forever?!
