Making a stamp
Ive been trying to make my own stamp by stamping as usual on a piece of scrap then Forcing a piece of red hot steel into the stamped scrap.
But it's not working.
I got a indent on the first heat then by the time I have realigned it on the second heat it's lost too much heat and distorts the "pattern" in the scrap
Any hint's or tip's that might help or am I being too ambitious?

Re: Making a stamp
Do you have a drawing of what it looks like. Do you want the letters raised and background recessed?? I have made many touchmarks and decorative hot stamps, perhaps I can give some advise.

Re: Making a stamp
That's all? Just surface grind the sides down on the 4 letter stamps to give the correct spacing, align clamp and weld. Watch out though, wide stamps can be difficult to do properly. Unless you get it dead straight, one side will be deeper than the other.
The alternative is to make a smithing magician. I made one here and posted a link to the original ABANA tutorial.
You could make an adapter that fits inside the top slideway and guides four stamps side by side. If you clamp the knife down, you can wang away with a hammer and all the stamps will fall exactly in the right place.

Re: Making a stamp
Here is a image of a stamp I made NWBA initials, "Northwest Blacksmith Association" and "Murphys Law" prevailed and I did it backword. The initials were cut with a graver and small chasing hammer. If I remember right the stamp was made with high or medium carbon steel and heat treated.
These were stamped with a fly press but can be forged by hand but won't go as deep. It's nice to have a striker if done by hand.
The hot stamp in the image is third from the left, it is held in a vise for the picture.
