Damascus patterns
How are they made? would it be an idea to make a catalougue here with instructions on how different patterns are made?
There has to be thousands of varieties of patterns, so what about starting here to make a resurse for smiths that are interested?
I will start with the simplest of patterns
Random
Simply start with two different steels, (can be used on other materials to) put one on top of the other untill you have a package of f.ex. 7 layers, then fold untill you have the requiered amount of layers you want, here is an example of random pattern:

3 layers; 2 twisted (not certain about the bottom one), with a mosaic possibly involving pure nickel in the middle. Perhaps.

Re: Damascus patterns
you are near the truth Peter, but what about other patterns, descriptions on how it is done? Here is anothe one from me, but now someone else have to continue.
This is DOuble twist
start with two bars of 17 layers, stretch them out to about 1x1 cm, twist one rightway and the other leftway, forge one on top of the other, and flatten the pacage vertically. Of course you get a pretty rough pattern with this few layers, but you can allways make more layers before twistingTrond

Re: Damascus patterns
Well, you can get red fluorspar - but I thought that was a rare variant. Can't imagine it being iron oxide, somehow. Sal ammoniac/ammonium chloride (scrape it off that blasted salt liquorice!) is white, so that ain't it.
S'probably red food colouring

Re: Damascus patterns
I dont know what canned metal is, but by the sound of it it is the same.
Mosaic damascus is made by filling a tube with small pieces of steel/ iron/ nickel/ powdered steel, sealing it, and forge welding the whole package.
So i would say that you have canned the steel
