Re: Hamon from a file
Any more pictures Colin? I have just settled down with a coffee, a rather nice calvados and half an hour on BB.
Now back "on the radar".

Re: Hamon from a file
Okey dokey, now here were we?
1 hour temper at...
...ooops, missed some
After the clay's dry & applied as you like, we'll go to the forge.
Make sure that your setup is free from clutter & is ergonomically free flowing (forge to water quench, water quench to oil quench, oil quench to file (more on this later) file to tempering oven)

Alternatively, you can forget all of that guff & get used to a certain method of negotiating alla mess
the forge is inna middle, water quench (wallpaper paste trough) is onna right & oil quench is hidden inna darkness onna left
Forge getting hot:

Tang first:

Not quite hot enough:

's got a curve (sorry, I can't take pics of the quench 'n' stuff
) but it got to critical, got edge quenched for a couple of seconds, then straight inna oil, back inna water to sizzle, then over to the pre-heated oven

80grit after tempering:

120grit Trizact:

400grit:

I've since taken it to 1000grit (with a quick detour via 600grit) & will be polishing & etching inna bit

Re: Hamon from a file
OK then, less than 12 hours ago, I had an annealed file & a request for a tutorial.
Well, after Sanding to 1000grit I went straight to polishing (mousemat backed Autosol
) & etched (warm vinegar, orange juice & washing up liquid) just rubbed it on
A quick wipe with bicarb of soda & camelia oil & here she is, Fuji inna mist

Re: Hamon from a file
You have a habit of making stuff look so easy when you break it down like that

But im still a little shakey...so I have a file you can show me on tommorow and over the weekend at Owens
