Re: Fairbairn Sykes
Thank's Danzo, Harry and Metalbudgie for your reply.
As Danzo has seen that style of guard in a book, maybe one day someone will be able to tell me more...

Re: Fairbairn Sykes
Hello
I hope you knowledgeable guys can help me. I bought this "Commando Knife" at an auction recently and I'm not sure if it's correct or not. The hilt is brass as is the chape, the crossguard is steel. On the crossguard is stamped an arrow followed by 38 (this is what makes me wonder if it's right or not). I'm no expert by a long way and any comments would be gratefully accepted. I've included some photos.
Thanks

Re: Fairbairn Sykes
Spotted this whilst surfing and thought it would be worthy of adding to this thread. For historical purposes these videos of the actual designer using the weapon he designed using the methods he practiced looks like interesting viewing. I'm amazed the originals have been lost and aren't in a PRO box file somewhere in the UK.

Re: Fairbairn Sykes
I spotted this First Pattern that to me looks 'right' to me but nobody bit at the low price it was offered on eBay-which is unusual. Bidding has ended so I ask the assembled experten what do you think-real or not real?
The top nut looks the right shape but I can't see any tool markings, sheath has the right amount of wear but the what should be a 'Newey' studded flap might be a replacement-chape is rounded but chromed like an original

Re: Fairbairn Sykes
Its a copy. Pommel nut looks wrong, shape of grip at top is wrong, press stud is definitely wrong. Other examples have been seen.

Re: Fairbairn Sykes
Here's a pic of it, it's a 3rd pattern one the man said.
I go to the Great Northern Arms Fair in Pudsey which is on a few times a year and there are lots for sale! The conditions range from great to dug up out of a field in France and the prices range accordingly.
This one looked in good condition to me and has the original sheath, it was £90 which I thought seemed like a decent price.
There are no marking on it except a little '1' on the pommel which I understand is a mould number (they can be 1-4).
Every time I pick it up it makes my hand smell metallic and weird I'm wondering if there's anything I can give it a wipe with that won't ruin it to clean it a bit?

Re: Fairbairn Sykes
Some nice ones in here:

I didn't know there were so many commemorative ones. I saw a Falklands one at the the arms fair that was really nice but I assumed it was a limited thing!
A person could spend a lot of money collecting the nice ones
