More back pack help please? Maxp v Sabre

    Maxpedition Vulture-II v Karrimor Sabre 45

Anyone had/have both and can compare? They have a lot of different functions (Aimed at different target audience perhaps?). The price is about the same. Curious to see if anyone could go one way or another. Or perhaps an alternative to these?

Oooo nice thread Marcus! I was searching for a Vulture customer review but cannot find one. Even Milspecmonkey don't seem to have one yet. I would guess that the Vulture has more compartments than the Sabre, if the Vulture is anything like their other packs.

And I'm sure you know but just to remind you - Charity can get them for us for cheap. Not 'on the cheap', but just cheap.

i'd go for the sabre, i find my one to be exceptionally comfortable and rugged as well as not looking to millitary. I didn't like the maxpedition backpack i had so much, it was heavy and cumbersome and all the little pockets confused me

my votye goes to the sabre

Only tiny issue I have with the sabre is tall people have suggested it to be not great for them?

I just can't make my mind up. I think I'll just walk into a shop, try something on and buy it... or procrastinate some more then go back and buy it

the sabre definitely doesn't fit me, i'm about 6'4 and limbs in proportion (thankfully) so the back length is too small. however people over 6ft have used it without problem so i guess the only way is to try them out.

i think the sabre is the more popular choice with the bushcrafters, but the MaxP has more attachment points for extra pouches and kit

Found this http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums...p/t-50188.html and thought it may provide some useful input and possible alternatives?

I haven't tried the MaxP but I would go with the saber. Its made in the UK to a very high standard and the saber (30) I have is brilliant kit and I want a bigger one at some point (probably a 45 like you) so if you get one let us know how you get on.

Another thing to think about is that the average length of time a sabre is unsold for in the classifieds here is about 3 minutes.

    e.g.:

I'd be absolutely sure that if you bought one and didnt like it for any reason you could sell it on for very little loss.

Well... I've got a first gen Maxped Vulture and a Sabre 75.

The Vulture is the most comfortable small pack I have used and it allows the attachment of as many pouches as you want.

Both packs are heavy duty.... with a nod to the Sabre for build quality.

The Sabre 45 and Maxped Vulture are very different beasties though... the Maxped has lots of zippers and compartments and the Sabre is a simple single compartment pack.

If you want a pack for camping... I would recommend going for the Sabre 75....

It's the best pack I have seen or used and it's always better to have a bit of extra room rather than having to crush all your stuff into the 45.

Personally..I couldn't manage with just the 45 for even a single nights camp without having to strap my sleeping bag and tarp to the outside of the pack.

Suppose it depends on how lightweight you go. I could go down to a 35 but I would be taking minimalist stuff. My tarp would probably be on the outside as my sleeping bag is 'oooge. 45 would give enough space for most people for an overnighter I think.

You can get some side pockets for the 45 as well can't you, that would take it up another 20 litres

Given the choice I'd go with the Sabre, but then again I reckon there are some other makers that are even better (Osprey/Macpac etc)

Up to 25 kilos in Autumn or Spring is lightweight in my book.

i have a similar problem i must admit, i try to go all minimalist, and then spot bits of kit that might be fun so throw it in, then i start thinking about food and then all of a sudden in weighs loads and takes up lots of space!

    That is me being minimalist.

Well... for a two nighter at least.

What I find is that... for a 3 day trip... the stack of sleeping bag + warm clothing + food will easily fill the main compartment of the 75 litre pack (and I don't take a whole roast chicken).

Whatever else I take has to go in the hood and an additional Webtex pouch.

My Camelbak is PLCE so that just clips onto the side... no problem.

I've been trying to figure out if I could carry a Snugpak under hammock thingy as well.... or if that would limit me to 2 miles walking a day...
