Re: Vintage Sheffield folder's (pic heavy !)

Nice post Mick, Thanks for showing.

I saw many of these knives in the flesh a few weeks ago when Mick popped round, the quality really shows when you handle them and open and close the blades. I am astonished that you have managed to collect so many in such perfect condition.

Wonderful to see this part of our local heritage, shame it is not more widely appreciated. I would like to see every Sheffield child get to handle some knives like this in school and be taught about what the city was built on.

Re: Vintage Sheffield folder's (pic heavy !)

Thanks very much mick for showing those beautiful knives. That is an awesome collection of whittlers. These are some examples of older Sheffield 4-bladed senator knives. The first is Baxter & Sons. It has wavy filed backsprings.

Next is a Needham bros with nice stag scales.

Two more pearl senators marked M. Mason Sheffield and Frank Mills respectively.

    Very nice indeed Mick.

I particularly like the gold over brass Harrison & Howson and the Ford and Medley.

Thanks for the complimentary comment's on the knives Rob, was a pleasure to show them to you and your's, and at the same time have a look at both your's and Nicola's handywork, remarkable !.

Am getting a little fussier with old age, getting to the stage that I only buy mintish knives, with original polish, edge and good walk and talk, unless the item in question is very rare, then I would buy in any cond.

Agree, today's Sheffield kid's just have no idea of their City's working heritage and agree it would be great to let them get hand's on with vintage item's ( so long as they aren't mine )

Hi S-k, thanks for the appreciative whittler comment's plus the knife pictures.

Have a soft spot for whittler's, a hard knife to make, they always were made by top cutler's, really nice knives, longer the better, so I'm told

    Great looking senator's

The Baxter jut oozes quality, lovely file worked backspin's cut in swages on all four blades, long pull nail nick's, the little blade next to the cut off pen, is it a budding blade ?.milled liner's , top bracket + age, great knife
The Needam looks very similar to my own, in size, but has rounded kicks, an older knife, Mill's also looks inter sting, not seen many, but know they are highly rated !

    thanks again for showing

Thanks also for the comment's Danzo, (that little H & H is a gem )& Marcus that rigging knife is Ok but would be great if the master blade hadn't had so much use, people 50 yrs ago were so inconsiderate !!

Thanks very much Mick. Doesn't seem to me that this knife would have a budding blade. On the left side, it looks like a coping blade and the other almost like a corn blade but it could be just mishapen through wear.

Here are two whittlers. The pearl knife by William Rodgers and the horn handled knife is marked R. Burnett, 10 Leith St, Edinburgh...must be the address of a retailer.

Just a trick of the swage S-K, I think quite an unusual knife, you don't corn blades on 4 pc knives

I really really like the WR whittler, just look at that masterblade and it's overall condition ! what's its length ?, maybe one of Stan's ? ( from the 50s)

Thanks for showing these beautiful knives.

Just brings it home to me that I'm only just beginning to get to grips with the real collecting thing.

    Thanks again. David

Thanks Mick. The closed length of the pearl whittler is 3.25 inches. Never occured to me that there might be a Shaw connection. There are no initials in the liners. The condition is 'new' except that the one small blade on the front left look like it might have cut something once and a spider on the swedge of the master blade.

Great little WR whittler S-K, I saw one sold recently same masterblade, but the backsprings and blade worked, not marked inside, carbon, very similar, made mega money !, the Baxter senetor seems to differ from the norm, in having the manacure blade replaced by the corn blade, unusual. Thank's again for adding your great pics and comment's.

Thank's for the comment's Chris, the large Machin is a very fine knife, you may know whittler's in general are quite hard to find above about 3 3/4 inch, lockback whittler's even more so, the Machin is both locking and long and the Ivory is carved and perfect, those guy's who made it certainly knew their stuff. the knife has issues, the blades have been heavily cleaned on a wragg dolly the blade nodds it's head slightly, but you have to remember it;s over 150 years old !

Hey David, cheer's for the appreciative comment's

Not sure what knives you already have, but I bet you have some eyecatching item's.

I met a couple of guy's at a motorway service station last year they showed me thing's I have never seen before or since ! my knees were shaking walking back to the car, all large mint knives on show !!
Great multi blades, several springs wide, fileworked guilded t/shell, large JR sports, horseman's all sorts, makes you realise what there really is about !
was just a little low, for a day or two afterwards !

anyway just after that, I picked up a little 1 1/2 in Greaves, sheath works, 4 pc 3 spring's guiled on the outer ,two fileworked, £ 3 from a junk shop in Louth, cheered me up no end !

Sorry for going on a bit !

Re: Vintage Sheffield folder's (pic heavy !)

These are examples of old smokers knives. The first a Victorian era knife by Christopher Johnson with a spring loaded cigar nipper that is cleverly covered by the pipe tamper when closed.

Next a Prescott & Milner knife with a variety of attachments including a cigar fork.

This knife was made by Jos Westby & Co with the name of a Sheffield steel manufacture on the blade. Perhaps a high class promotional item. It once had a pipe tamper disc that rotated out from the left end. Sadly it is missing.

Sorry for getting thing's out of order S-K, you have so many knives, and I am so slow at typing

Again very interesting item's, what great pearl, the Wesby 6pc has Sheffield diamond pattern?, nice little cigar fork, v nice
The P&M 7 pc again smart, all blades tools snappy ?, great looking pearl !
Never had a knife with a cigar cutter, tamper. the CJ looks tidy though !

    More examples please

    Mick
