Re: Vintage Sheffield folder's (pic heavy !)
Nice one Paul. Is that a whittler pattern as well?

Re: Vintage Sheffield folder's (pic heavy !)
I'm not completely clear what makes a knife a whittler. The file blade is interesting in that the end is a small knife blade. It doesn't look like it has been done after manufacture, though my Granddad was a cabinet maker and certainly not opposed to modifying tools to make them work better for himself.
Edit: Google is my friend. I know know what a whittler knife is. Yes mine is a whittler. Anyone else as behind the times as me might like to know that it is a three bladed knife with one large blade at one end and two smaller ones at the other. The two smaller blades each have a spring while the large single blade uses both of the springs.Last edited by paulrbarnard; 03-01-12 at 05:25 PM.

I believe that is one of their older marks. The history of the company is rather interesting.

Re: Vintage Sheffield folder's (pic heavy !)
Re the last four posts
1. The scales are jigged bone.
2. If it does in fact say Oil the Hinges not Oil the Joints then it's a very rare mark.
3. Encore was the mark of thomas Turner not Wingfield's.
4. Although (repeating) the Whittler is an American term for a three bladed knife which has two back springs; the master blade back square bearing on both and the two pen blades hinged at the opposite end bearing on one each, there are examples of four, five and six bladed knives with 'whittler' component parts. Whittler purists like all three blades to be 'cutters', but the not so choosy accept a nail file in place of one of the pen blades. The very end of the file is a nail cleaner/cuticle presser.
5. The Crown over Harp mark was registered in 1885 primarily for plated ware.
6. Turners bought the marks in 1898 and re-registered WW&R silver mark for its own use.
7. I suspect that the Encore mark on the Sommelier mentioned by David was made by Turners from residual WW&R stock.

The stamp inside the scale of mine appears to be 21-32 or 37. I'm still in pursuit of the ever elusive Stan Shaw made folder.

Re: Vintage Sheffield folder's (pic heavy !)
The Allen knife was made by George Allen and pre dates 1861 when the name changed to Allen & Son Duke Street Cutlers Works.
James Deusna? is James Dewsnap.

Re: Vintage Sheffield folder's (pic heavy !)
Interesting thread this
Only took the one pic of my older knives earlier when taking some shots of new Victorinox, so thought I'd post it now and probably come back to this thread and quote this post when I've got individual pictures.
