It's called an 'open' razor in Sheffield Simon.

Grace, that miniature razor is absolutely extraordinary, very rare, so tiny but perfectly made, in wonderful condition too !.

    Many thanks for showing.

interesting - i'd never heard that term before.
i usually hear them called either "straight" razor, or the unfortunately termed "cut-throat" razor.
"open" razor makes more sense than either of those names.

I'm signing off now until a week today - we're bound for the Channel Islands in the early hours of tomorrow and I just don't have time to respond in full. This topic caused quite a stir about two years ago.

hi everyone, wish i was going to the channel isles tom.
lovely little razor grace, dont know what you would shave with it ?
heres another knife from my collection, its a coutel, it was made in sheffield probably in the 80s, dont know how long they made knives for or if they still do.
i say they as i assume it was a little company rather than one man. the scales are pieces of pearl and abalone.

That's a very decent looking knife Glenn.

I think the three guys involved in making the Coutel knives back in the late 1970s were Graham Clayton, Ian Southern and Norman Marsh the engraver, they produced some fantastic stuff.

The US selling agents for Coutel back then were Gorman & Wright.

Hi mito0, I think Ian made many of the knife parts for Graham, cutting out the blades springs and liners..grinding, marking and so on, a pity Graham is not a member of this forum as he could enlighten us a little..

Jim Parker (Parker Cutlery) used to sell 'abalone' Coutel knives C1980, one very similar to Glenn's was priced at $300 (less 40% for NKCA members)

Some of the knives the Coutel guys produced were quite extraordinary..some over sized display pieces, sets and specials, great work.

i would imagine your dad knew graham.
he worked at kellham island with grinder rowland swinden, and made knives bearing the "digby's" mark.
i'll try to get some pics if my coutel whittler this afternoon.

Re: Vintage Sheffield folder's (pic heavy !)

For many years Jersey has been kind to me in my search for quality knives, but the halcyon days are now over I fear.

Antiques shops on the island number a mere half a dozen or so and apparently when the occasional good folder becomes available it is immediately snapped up by one or other of a growing group of collectors,

This silver-handled eraser from the Victorian period came out of St Helier, but there was nothing else worthy of note.
