Re: Vintage Sheffield folder's (pic heavy !)

Thanks I wonder how old they are? Is anyone making something comparable in quality to the larger Joseph Rogers knife these days? I would like to get decent/classic something for every day use.

The small multi-blade is called a 'chatelaine' knife Scott. These were worn on a belt chain around a housekeeper's waist and yours therefore would have had a shackle fitted to the head end when it was made.

Taylors Eye Witness or Trevor Ablett might still make something like that. Other wise you'll probably have to go for an American manufacturer like GEC, Case, or Queen Cutlery.

I really like those two Joseph Rodgers knives they are great.

Some nice knives there. I particularly like the rodgers buffalo horn handled knife.

    Thanks for showing them :-)

Re: Vintage Sheffield folder's (pic heavy !)

I got lucky this morning. One of the boot sale dealers I've been cultivating came up with better than usual goodies for me. He will however sell to whoever shows up if I don't show early every week so I've missed some good stuff he had too. At any rate even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.

Joseph Rodgers with the original leather wallet that has an ivory stud to hold the flap down. There is a name and date I can't quite read (Patrick Louhener, 1 Oct 191 written on the flap along with what looks like £2.00. It still has alot of original polish along with the pepper spots and the tortoise scales are perfect. It has a small nicks in the tip of the master blade but is otherwise perfect. The shield has E.P.L engraved on it which would correlate with the name on the flap if he were using his second name.

Arnold and Sons London Surgical instrument. Two implements have broken tips and there is a chunk missing on the end of one scale but still in generally very good condition.

Re: Vintage Sheffield folder's (pic heavy !)

Picked this one up recently. Apparently some sort of scout knife. It's seen some abuse and I'd say the bail looks home-made. The scales appear to be a similar material to the alloy found on Navy clasp knives. Doesn't have Sheffield stamped anywhere on it either.

The blade markings. On one side its either 'E.T Markkan' or E.T Markhan

And 'The Scouts' on the reverse.

I've got one of those scout knives with good scales and a bad blade. looks like it was run over by a truck.

Thats good to know IH (the fact you've got one not that it looks like its been run over by a truck). And it looks like that does it? The reason I ask is when I examined it in the light of day it looks like the marlin spike edge of the knife, specifically the scales, has been ground down. I had been wondering whether its been altered at some point.

    Thanks

Re: Vintage Sheffield folder's (pic heavy !)

I found a picture. The area is a bit different but it could be possible different firms were buying parts in and making knives with slightly different features. Mine has a tang stamp that just says Sheffield England.

Re: Vintage Sheffield folder's (pic heavy !)

So the bail on mine is definately a home-made bodge job. Yours has a copper bail which means pre-1942 if I've read the WW2 folders thread correctly. I'll just show a picture of what I mean of mine. It looks ground off but maybe it's just poor quality workmanship.

It's probably a workmanship issue, I can't imagine these were anything more than low priced knives for children.

The bail looks legit to me. No different to what's shown on the other knives in IH's photo

I know I can't think what could of been machined off from there. It's hardly the star of my modest collection just thought I buy it cos I'd never seen an example of it before.
