Re: Vintage Sheffield folder's (pic heavy !)

What is it about this time of year one wonders that causes posts to this particular thread to drop off like Autumn leaves? Some regular contributors seem to have dried up altogether during the past few weeks.

That aside, the following may be of interest:-

I bought the knife at Wetherby yesterday and although the steel screamed German, I was sufficiently convinced that it just had to be Sheffield made, or at least British, because of the subject matter, i.e. George V and the future EdwardVIII whilst still Prince of Wales.

It was only after I'd cleaned the tangs that I realised it had been made by the Solingen firm of Heinrich Kaufmann & Soehne, Solingen.... for export into England via a British company -J.Horton & Co Ltd....about whom I can find nothing.
Levine lists their trademark as K55K over the word 'Mercator', but the mark-side stamp on this knife VERY clearly shows.... No55/ over 'Mercator'..... and on the pileside there is a flower together with a crossed swords/letter'S' rebus.
The figural work on the brass scales is excellent so I'm not overly disappointed, although I don't buy German-made knives as a rule.

Very interesting. I attribute the drop off to a lasck of money and fewer shows, boot sales, and finding oppurtunities. That being said I've got about 200 knives I really should have posted on here but never got around to because I just don't have the time and I didn't seem to be getting much feed back from anyone about them. I guess we aren't a talkative bunch on this thread really. I've got a long stretch off at Christmas so maybe I'll start posting some of this years finds.

Here's one from the other day. I need to get out a glass to read the stamp since it's tiny and down near the liner. Perfect aside from a little bit of peppering. Tortoise shell scales with easy open dips at the nail nicks.

Another one that is nearly perfect aside from some peppering. No good sunlight for pictures though. I'm at work and can't remember who made this one.

Re: Vintage Sheffield folder's (pic heavy !)

Well its been a while since ive posted any vintage Sheffield folders...So, just like buses heres two.
First up is this (i think) rather fine gents gun knife. Its made by John watts of Sheffield est.1765.Closed it is 4 1/2in long.It has the main blade, button hook and corkscrew. Also it has lugs for removing both 12 and 16 gauge cartridges. The scales are stamped PLA TIN OID like hall marks. It has everything a gentleman would need in the field If anyone has any info on this like type/name and date id be grateful.Im guessing it pre-dates ejecting shotguns?

Next is this rather heavy multi tool folder by Walker & Hall Sheffield. The tools on are: A pair of nippers/shears which are held closed with a little catch, nail file, blade, button hook, combined bottle opener and fid, corkscrew, gimlet, pointed hook and a reamer. The bottle opener has a logo of a flag with W&H inside.the scales are i think nickle silver. Not in the best of conditions but ive never seen one like it so i had to have it!Thanks and again any info like is this trade specific?Date?

Those two are real gems. I Love'em. I've seen one like the bottom one but with fewer implements.

the watts knife could have been made as recently as the 1990s - that firm managed to hang on for quite a while.
shell pullers are a bit unusual for english knives, although they're very common on german knives.
i wouldn't use the shell puller as a means of dating, though - break-action shotguns are still made.

Re: Vintage Sheffield folder's (pic heavy !)

new guy here, english living in the USA.
Just got back from England after my Pa's funeral, he had a love for guns and knives
Brought this one back with me - my Grandmother bought it for my Dad when he was 17 (1945)
It was made in Sheffield which is 10 miles from where we live in the UK, &Wakefield) made by J. Nowill and sons.
two of the blades have the makers mark and the 3rd blade has a crossed key marking, trying to find info on this one, any help would be great.
    Rob.

Your knife is known as a 'Stockmans' pattern.the blade shown open in your second pic was used for castrating livestock.Scales look to be horn.Nice knife.Theres a few like this buried in the depths of this thread..

amazing piece of research as always, mick.
i wonder if anyone could shed some light on the pla tin oid stamp.
it doesn't say "1890s" to me for some reason, although the button hook sure does.
